Of course, there’s always been a flip side, but ever since the rise of Oasis, the knee-deep blandness of attitude-laden rockers has smothered everything else. Thankfully, Celestial Engine’s Malastrugança compilation couldn’t be further away from the posturing parkas if it tried. As a result, it’s one of the most interesting, exciting and eclectic albums you’ll hear all year. Those artists that have already a profile of sorts all weigh in with special songs. Josephine Oniyama underlines her unique beauty with Watching The Sun Rise, Sam Hammond proves his cowboy ramblings are still a fine choice to make with The Tactless Man, and Homelife’s Full Cause Instrumental is every bit as delightfully nonsensical as anything the band have done before. That said, it’s the lesser-known acts that take the real praise. You’d be hard pressed to choose which was the main highlight amongst Mookid’s seductive The Grand Goodbye, Edwin Williamson’s Pentangle-style folk-out Dragons Eye, Lillis’ gently meandering Cutie and Alyss’ off-kilter jazz-souled Forest Song. The truth is Malastrugança doesn’t have a weak moment. Born out of a dream to do things differently, it is a credit to that desire and a genuinely wonderful album. Lose your swagger, join the revolution and start your journey to a new Mancunia. |
