From grassroots to glory

BBC Radio Manchester has been looking into community sports for a special programme and found a host of rising stars, including a super schoolgirl swimmer, a tremendous teenage tennis player and wrestler-turned-judo expert.

In the pool, swimmer Carla Tither, from the Ashton Central Club, based in Makerfield, near Wigan, is only 11 years old but is already making a big splash at breaststroke. The club has a pedigree for producing stars, with Commonwealth bronze medallist Helen Don-Duncan in their ranks.

Urmston teenager Ryan Harris has decided to pack his bags and leave the country to chase his dream of winning Wimbledon. The talented 13-year-old has joined a prestigious tennis academy near Nice in the South of France to perfect his skills. It was at an early age that Ryan's parents discovered just how good their son was at tennis and they'll be explaining why he has made the move abroad to further his sporting career.

Their stories are just two found by BBC Radio Manchester as part of a special profile on community sport by presenters Nassima Marref and Andy Buckley.

Alongside them, there was also be a feature on hockey and squash at Bowdon Sports Club in South Manchester, a spotlight on Rochdale sailor Emma Williams, Chorlton wrestler-turned-judo expert Joe Mossford and netball coach Emma Chapman.
