BBC Salford?

Could the BBC be leaving Manchester - for Salford? After looking at competing bids from Manchester and Salford councils, the BBC says Salford's MediaCity:UK project is the front runner. What do you think? Messageboard

Salford MediaCity:UK
Salford MediaCity UK: how it might look

After 30 years on Oxford Road, the BBC could be about to leave Manchester - for neighbouring Salford.

The BBC wants to relocate several major departments - Children's, Sport, New Media, Five Live and Research and Development - out of London and into a new purpose-built centre by 2010. The aim is to create a "media zone" with independent film-makers and other media providers being invited to take up space.

After looking at bids from Manchester and Salford, BBC governors announced on 15 June that they were now treating Salford's MediaCity:UK proposal as the front runner.

Competition between Manchester and Salford has been fierce: it's believed the move will create up to 10,000 jobs and add £170m to the regional economy. However, the whole project is dependent on agreeing a licence fee with the Government.
