|Metrolink: back on track (almost)|
The original Big Bang expansion plan proposed three new lines out to Rochdale and Oldham, Manchester Airport and Ashton-under-Lyne.

But plans were put on hold in 2004 when the Government said it would only pay £520m towards the estimated £900m costs.
Since then the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTE) has revised the plans and today phase 3a of the expansion has been given the go-ahead.
To see the new Metrolink routes, see our brand new map, which you can download.
The routes given funding are as follows:
- North - as far as Rochdale train station
- East - as far as Droylsden
- South - as far as St Werburgh's Rd in Chorlton
Big Bang, little Bang?
Building work could begin in the next two years. But what about the original Big Bang expansion plan? Well, the GMPTE says it is still seeking further funding to complete the lines as originally planned.
But the main losers are the areas of Wythenshawe and Ashton-under-Lyne which are not included in the the smaller, revised expansion.
