Mike TV of Beats For Beginners

Club Brenda

Sounds From The Other City II
The old stagers of the day, Club Brenda have spent the last seven years putting on odd-ball avant-garde performance nights and fantastic music. Brenda's Jayne Compton explains what their SFTOC II is going to be like.

Club Brenda

  • Club Brenda move in on the Rovers Return from 4pm to 11pm
  • Acts playing: Beats For Beginners, Hooker, Sporting Hero, Magic Arm, My Side Of The Mountain, Sir Yes Sir

Why are you involved with Sounds From The Other City?

"Club Brenda is involved because we do our infamous shows at Islington Mill. We met Morrie and Mark [the organisers], who are organising it, through these parties as they also have a recording studio there and are quite involved in the whole scene. We were really excited to be asked because last year’s was such a great day out and I really think the line-up this year will make it even better."

Who's the stand-out act on your stage?

"Our stage is going to be one big party, Brenda style! Seriously though, we have some really cool DJs and also some performance that I think a lot people are looking forward to. There is the Irish enigma that is Sporting Hero, a really interesting new Manchester band Sir Yes Sir! as well as the live debut of former Escape Pod front man, Magic Arm. Also, we’re really excited about the closing set from Beats from Beginners, as they are real Brenda favourites!"

Why is Sounds From The Other City important?

"I think it’s important because it really is just about the music and the bands. It’s not about record companies or big corporate freebies and I think that gives it a real energy. I also think its a bit of an adventure, similar to when we do our own nights at the Mill, it’s a lot of people coming to a part of town that they haven't been to before and that gives all the venues a more special atmosphere."

If you had to choose between the music of Salford and Manchester, which would it be?

"Why choose when you don't have to! Seriously, I think that is one of the great things about the two cities being so close to each other - they both have very dense yet very different heritages, yet they are physically right beside each other. This means that everyone can have the best of both worlds!

"It’s good to get the opportunity to do things that are not in the same old locations and the venues on Chapel St are rarely used. It makes it more interesting and edgy and I think that's where Sounds from the Other City has got it just right."
