Manchester City's official supporters club and other groups have written an open letter to fans urging them to support their team rather than goad Manchester United, but as United fans will know, it's more than just City supporters that are guilty of voicing the chants. | "A lot of us cringe when we hear it and we are trying to do anything we can to stop it." | | Alan Garry, Manchester City Supporters Club |
The chairman of the City supporters club, Alan Garry, was a school boy at the time of the crash, and he feels the weight of responsibility to educate fans as to why the chants are, as he puts it, "nasty and repugnant". "We (the official supporters club) are taking a lead in trying to stop these people doing it. A lot of us cringe when we hear it and we are trying to do anything we can to stop it. It has gone on a long, long time and it's about time in our view that it stops." It's hoped that the letter and the message will have hit home to fans in time for the next Manchester derby, at the City of Manchester stadium on 14 January, but should the FA ask other clubs to follow City's example?
