Joseph Arthur at Night and Day - 8/10

Steven Long (gig: 25/07/05)
I was hoping I wasn’t going to feel too much of an interloper as I really wasn’t keen on Joseph Arthur’s recent album, Our Shadows Will Remain, which seemed to cloak what sounded like good songs in a fug of electronics and murky instrumentation.

For my part, I thought it could have benefited from more of stripped-down ‘live’ sound and was hoping to give Joseph Arthur the benefit of the doubt in the very live cauldron of the Night and Day.

Quietly preparing to eat a large helping of musical humble pie, Joseph Arthur shambled on stage and proceeded to prepare the aforementioned dish with a gig that was, in parts, totally amazing.

Employing whole heaps of electronic trickery that complimented his great vocal range and mangled guitar style, he managed to tread the line between electronica and Americana with a fine bunch of songs that were a treat to listen to. Then when he felt the need, he’d press a magic button, and music would automatically accompany the painting he was composing on the stage back-drop. He even managed to grab two of Gomez for an impromptu guest spot!

From performance art to music with a nice line in self-deprecating humour, Joseph Arthur provided something for just about everyone, even this party-pooper. Now, all I have to do is find the tomato sauce for that musical pie he’s prepared for me.
