The Motion Pictures

in their own words...
The Motion Pictures was formed in summer 2004 as the solo music of Manchester based songwriter and guitarist Peter Philipson.

What We Think:

"There is an undoubtedly solid air of John Martyn to The Motion Pictures’ sound and that’s no bad thing. Nick Drake’s less whimsical moments also act as a calling card, which is again a plus. Gently beguiling and stirringly emotional, the Wherever songs have an understated beauty that shines like a quivering candle at dawn."

Chris Long

Having written a collection of songs over a period of several years it seemed about time to record them and Brian Edwards and Paul Blakesley joined on drums and bass respectively to complete the line up.

Over 20 songs were recorded during two days in a village hall and a few late nights in a Barlow Moor Rd flat with Deets engineering throughout. Musically the sound lies between John Martyn and The Smiths with hints of Elliot Smith and John Fahey – subtle vocal melodies and a warm raw texture - from the jangling and chiming guitars of Ahead, through the slow-groove driven murky alt-folk of Favourite Star to the pure baroque-country of Be Easy on Yourself featuring the sublime voice of Nancy Cunliffe.

The first EP, Wherever, is released on the new Timbreland label based in Manchester and includes five tracks. A further EP and an album will be released later this year.
