The station launched last Saturday and is the culmination of six months of hard work from over one hundred young people from across the borough. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Retro Radio is designed to teach students more about life in Oldham in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s – and to encourage them to talk to their parents and grandparents about what life was like in the past. The students have used this information to create vox pops, interviews and short documentaries for broadcast.

The BBC GMR Bus was on hand to help teach the youngsters interviewing and editing skills. Gill Kearsley, BBC GMR’s Oldham Community reporter says, “The young people were extremely enthusiastic and keen to learn. There are definitely some radio producers in the making within the group!” Skillsbase’s Managing Director, Kate Bailey said: “I am so proud of everyone who has been involved in this project. All of our students have worked exceptionally hard to create material for broadcast and I am delighted with what they have achieved. "The average age of those involved is just 14 and their enthusiasm is infectious. I have to admit it was an emotional moment when the station finally went live.”

The first show was presented by students Giorgia Tierney and Lauren O’Mara and Retro Radio is also claiming to have the youngest presenter to have his own radio show. Four-year-old Dylan Forristal took to the airwaves on Sunday with a look back at Oldham through the decades, helped along the way by students at Skillsbase's weekend workshops. Retro Radio is broadcasting until 2nd April 2005 and can be heard in Oldham on 106.7 FM. |
