bus ticket art by Adele Prince

Is it art - or rubbish?

Bricks. Dung. A bed. Half a sheep. They've all been turned into creative works. And now crumpled Manchester bus tickets. But is it art? Or just rubbish?

How to Make a Bus Sculpture

  • interactive exhibition
  • 7 Feb to 18 Feb 2005
  • Chapman Gallery
  • University of Salford, The Crescent
  • Tel: 0161 295 5000

Most people crumple them, drop them or tear them up - but interactive artist, Adele Prince, prefers to make tiny sculptures out of hers.

The humble bus ticket is the subject of a brand new exhibition at the University of Salford's Chapman Gallery, called How to Make a Bus Sculpture (7 February - 18 February 2005).

Adele Prince
Urban origami: Adele Prince

Adele Prince is 32, and studied Interactive Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University. It all started when she became preoccupied with collecting bus tickets on her way work. Each day she made miniature origami 'sculptures', photographed the results.  She's even produced an instructional video.

"It's an obsession of mine," explains Adele. "My work aims to encourage people to step back from their routine and look at why they do things in a certain way. It's about recognising the beauty in something quite small." [Listen to an interview with Adele Prince - link under 'See Also']

'Crumple ticket in palm, then flatten'

The two-week exhibition will feature a series of animations and instructions demonstrating the art of the 'bus sculpture'. And there'll be a chance for the public to make their very own sculptures with old tickets.

Having read the 'how to make bus sculptures' instructions on her website, we can't quite work out whether Adele is having a laugh! (eg. "Make two loose folds in the first third, then crumple the rest of the ticket.") Have a look at our gallery and you decide. [See a gallery of photos - link under 'See Also]

Is it art?

its not wether it is good art its wether you can get it displayed in the right places and get it sold

Jan
Conceptual art at its most provocative. Look at all those messages! This is art. P.S. You seem to have forgotten art is subjective.

Jwo
If someone uses pretty paper for origami then people would see it as a work of art. Especially if it is something bold and big. Why can't the oppsite be true? As an art student i would not personally see it as art as everyday to college i make stars and squares out of them. But she has gone through the trouble to have it installed intio an art gallery and to do that she must have some guts and someone along the line must have said it is art. Everyone could do a piece of modern art. It is a question of coming up with the idea.

shea
is only art if its beging sold or in a gallery

Jon
Not to my taste. But if it is art, I have some masterpieces in my back pocket

kelly
if that's what stimulates youre mind you do what you have to...some people say its rubbish but people need to learn to understand free expresion even if it is screwing up a ticket...

Anneka
Its got people talking about it and thinking about what may or may not be behind it all therefore the artist has done excatly what they set out to do if u dont like it dont talk about just igore it if u do then it isnt art.....its the people that hate it that make it art........personaly i love it.

Dominic
people are too quick to criticise others, most comments are slagging of the artist,if you could do better wny not create your own work of art in this time?

Anna
Still quite interesting how a couple of simple bustickets can arouse so much indignation...If it's so crap, then why even bother commenting on them? 'Cheers' to all the creatives out there who've been before and are yet to come...!

kath
Jorge: Just cos you think you can produce the same thing or if someone else can do it, does not mean that it isn't art.

david
aye its a bit crappy

diane phillips
Ive just screwd up a corn flake box to put in the bin, perhaps I should save it...it has some fascinating shape and definition... what twonk.

Margaret Gradwell
Have you ever heard of the story of the Kings New Clothes? Enough said!!!! If you want to see real bus tickets go to the museum of transport in Boyle Street Manchester.I am sure they will be delighted to give you as many tickets as you like to create art with.LOL Now what can I do with the half a bus load of time tables ? a sculpture or two I'll make a fortune or maybe just end up in the funny farm.

Kevin Humphreys
Anything that a person has modelled into a form and given a name can be called art, this is the problem, nobody can agree when a substance becomes art or ceases to be so. It's the level of creativity that comes into question here, most observers would be bewildered that such a mundane form could be exhibited as high art shown as an example of acheivement. Galleries should aim for better standards in exhibitions, the public deserve more interesting exhibits than this.

george
u have all bothered to wright somethin an she has provoked a reaction surely that to me is what art means. i think it is ery good

Nick Edwards
I hope this artist hasn't been paid for his work!

Daryl
Open your eyes and see all or nothing. It is in the eye of the beholder, only,,, this eye is blind to what you see. But it doesnt mean its not art. Personally I think Metro tram tickets would be far more appealing!!!!!!

zoe
it is absolutley rubbish, what is this world coming to!

angle
i just think that its really stupid who could u make an exhibition on folders up bus ticket i mean were do they get this idea from its such a silly thing to do

Andy Scargill , Preston
Time and time again i have this very arguement with my art student girl friend, I can't see how half the trash (literally) thrown into galleries can be clased as a work of art. The amount of tallent required to produce this garbage is minimal. But as she says these artist have studied for years to get the theory behind it... well in theory i'm going to print this web page fold it many times into a mini computer and talk about how it reflects todays society and the way we communicate. It's all rubbish.. rubbish i tell you! And once again all the artist on here with there rose tinted specs wake up and realise you will never ever be as good as the old masters... losers!

Mike G
If it is art then I have been doing it for years folding my bus tickets if only I had kept them ?

Mark James
Its not even April the 1st yet! Surely this has to be a prime contender for and april fools joke. I'd suggest like Tracey Emins bed / tent & other alledged works of art its something that would not be missed if it went up in flames. And it certainly won't be missed next month/year/decade

Lewis b Howells
As the old adage says" you can take a horse to water but a pencil must be lead!" So it goes for new art, what would Inspector Blakey make of it?

Jorge
I coulg do that! Why didn't I think of it?

Julie Worthington
It takes all sorts - and Adele obviously knows how to manipulate the system into providing her with the financial indpndence that many of our OAPS would be envious of ! Perhaps crumpled pension books could mak an appearanc soon ?

Michael Roberts
What has art come to? Do these artists really believe that these images will be passed from generation to generation? But then again who knows perhaps one day the Sistine Chapel shall be decorated with bus tickets, God help us all!

trisha
its rubbish. its a lazy attempt to try and be creative

steven
Everyone's a Critic, saying that the amount of art in my pocket is amazing!

MH (Art teacher)
May I suggest Mr Philppotts does the following :- 1) Take a course in anger management. 2) Take a cold shower 3) Go and see some of the excellent art work being produced in our Universities and colleges. 4) Set light to his own farts to see real interactivity.

Jurgen
Alec, you are right. Ticket sculpture is real art. So is the 'horses on the beach' poster. Both are examples of the lazy and the pretentious - traits to you which you obviously can add another: arrogance.

MR PHIL POTTS
WHAT UTTER TWADDLE!WASTING TAX PAYERS MONEY ON A COURSE CALLED 'interactive arts' (what's that!!!!).I SUGGEST THE ONLY INTERACTIVITY THIS SO CALLED 'WORK 'COULD GENERATE IS A SECONDARY PERSON SETIING IT ALIGHT!

Eddie Cash
This is real art for the masses on the move, and on the cheap. Imagine what could be done with a weekly bus pass.!The Philosophic resonance that could be acheived when the daily commuters get into Bus art could shake the foundations of the art establishment!

Alec Maddick
Donnie you are a complete philistine. Wake up and get a life. There is more to life than sitting at home swilling lager and moaning about other people's success. Bus ticket sculpture is real Art, not like the 'horses on the beach' poster that you no doubt have on your sad walls.

Donnie
This is not art, it is a disgrace. This is the sort of thing that public money goes towards funding - someone to crumple bus tickets!! Where's the creativity? Where's the skill? It's rubbish, pathetic, and a complete and utter con.

Brian Sewwage
Pure unadultarated dross!!!!!!!!!!! Ye Gods, my cat litter looks more artistic after Tiddles does his doings!!!!!

steve wooller
art is an expression of ones imagination, artists have gone too far, what have our child got to look forward to in the future ? RUBBISH !!!!

andy murdoch mono hebdono
nice to see the old "my 3 year old can do better than that" make an appearance. also good inspector junior's doing his bit in the democratization of art...i've encouraged or taught art to people from 1-35 and as soon as you divorce kids from the entrenched views of their parents, they quickly realise it's not about replicating the lacy ruffles and gold braid of henry viii...160 years of photographic history has made that slightly redundant...it's about seeing and thinking differently...a brickie up a ladder has a different view of the world than a gardener or an architect...thankfully. it's about sharing different experiences of our common environment. i like the idea of bus ticket sculpture starting discussion and debate...if you've ever been on the "93 islington" (the ticket in the photo...to euston i think) no one even looks at each other, never mind have a conversation. ------------------unless of course mr inspector is taking the mick, then i applaude your situationist wit...

Steven Wallwork MMU
Well done Adele. Art is an expression, you are creating a form from a subject we've regard as passed its, use by date. By doing so you have allowed people to make comments, some are positve others may be negative.Surely this is a form of art in its self.

SmellTheCoffee
Well, there are obviously a great deal of ignorance about art today. FYI Those people who think artists are in it for the money are sadly mistaken. You really have to have a great deal of commitment and determination. Secondly people need only to have a look at Adele's website to see she has plenty of other strings to her bow and a great sense of humour. So lighten up a little and enjoy!

Graham
Good on you

Laura
Hasnt anyone ever heard the phrase 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. If people find this art then good for them. To see the best in things and make the most of things is a gift. More people should be like Miss Prince.

FRED THE RED
IN THE COURSE OF THE LAST TEN YEARS OR MORE I HAVE HAD TO VISIT THE ARTS DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNIS IN MANCHESTER. SOME OF THE WORK THAT THE STUDENTS PRODUCE IS EXCELLENT HOWEVER A FAIR PERCENTAGE OF WHICH THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE IS UTTER RUBBISH. ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE ACCEPTED EVEN THOUGH IT IS A USELESS WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME.

Feminist
Ben, Women can do much more than just have babies or havent you noticed the world has moved on. Adele's sculpture represents women's emancipation from a corporate male-dominated oppressive society, and cap doffing lackies like you won't stand in our way.

Ben Jahrea
Origami ? more like baloney if you ask me. Never heard so much nonsense. Why can't we go back to good old fashioned values, when we all knew our place and Britain was the centre of all that was great in the world. The likes of Adele Prince and Tracey Emin should get a job or stay at home and have babies like the rest of us..

Saul Bowlacz
Well said Mike. This is a distinguished piece of Art work which deserves credit.

MIKE
Why are people so quick to criticise new works of art. Adele Prince's bus ticket sculpture is a fine example of new Brit art. A stunning dialogue between form and function, hinting at a subliminal macro texture of material and/or place. Please give her work a chance, go and see it.

inspector
utter rubbish, my 3 year old son can crumple up bus tickets much better than this crackpot.

Gareth Jones, Droylsden
This is symptomatic of what is wrong with art today. We all make our bus tickets into little stick men, horses or whatever but don't have such arrogance to think that anyone wants to see our doodles. This woman went to college to produce bus ticket sculptures? I can do it after a lifetime of bus travel but don't shout about it. She says its about 'recognising the beauty in something so small' - I didn't realise there were any big arguments denying that small things could be beautiful. Why doesn't the artist just show us a video of her staring at her own navel, I'm sure someone would put it in an exhibition.

Erna
I think this is great! At last something to do while on the bus!

anwer
I think that the tickets may look like art if they are moulded into the right sahpe otherwise i think it is rubbish wasting time on tickets

Nadine Apostolou
I think this is lovely! How many times have we folded our bus tickets and then completely disregarded them? I appreciate what Adele Prince is doing here - taking notice of the little things in life. We all need to do that from time to time. One can get so wrapped up in the bigger picture or be "too busy" to appreciate little details. The sculptures look so pretty and origami is hard to do right - I have never succeeded. I would go to see this exhibition (I like the interaction bit too) - I think it would please me more than looking at, for example, weird mannequins of welded together children with genitalia stuck to their faces. But, hey, it's all personal, eh?

Samantha
How this can be called Art, I don't know. "A folded bus ticket" I must go through my pockets I could make some money!

BRIAN HORROCKS
This is yet another example of the KINGS NEW SUIT of so called art! My ass it's the dross like this that pollute the minds of the young and keep so called artistes and their critiques in a well funded job by us rate payers! Bring on another bonfire to rid our eyes from this rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nick Mills - Bury
Maybe used loo roll will be next ?

phil henry
it's art- where do i get a ticket?

charles b
it would be good if she starts doing "art" on pizza boxes and mcdonald boxes manchester would be a cleaner place!

Gareth Jones, Droylsden

geo Woods
just the sort of thing one did with tram tickets on the way to school. Art? Skilled? Does she get paid for it? We are all being conned by this new school of creative? art.

cYRIL
EVERY ONE DOES IT - EVEN IF THEY ARE UNAWARE THEY ARE DOING IT. mY GOD!!! WE ARE ALL ARTISTS AND WE DON'T NO IT. PS HELLO eh & ap

John, Dublin
This is just another excuse for talentless people to pass somehtin off as Art. I think it is disrespectful for other people who have talent and create works of Art as their achievements are being undermined by pieces of rubbish like this
