John Warburton

Comedian of the year - John Warburton

By Carys Kaiser
A highlight in every year's Manchester comedy festival is the City Life comedian of the year final. It's always a pleasure watching the comedians sweat...

Comedian of the Year 2004

  • John Warburton took the title
  • Other finalists were:

Rob Riley, Ian Fox, Mike Landers, Chris Roche, Andy Smith, Roland Gent, Ryan Gleeson

The competion has been running for over 15 years now and the first person to win was Caroline Aherne. Other previous winners include Dave Spikey, Justin Moorhouse, John Bishop and Seymour Mace to name a few.

It was a tense evening because, for most there, a lot riding on this competion. After all, it really can make your career. As you can see from the names mentioned, it can make you a household name.

Eight comedians, all of a high standard, took to the stage and all were very well received. Judging comedy is a thankless task at the best of times. Let's face it, how do you select the winner when they were all funny?

But there was one who stood out from the rest the minute he walked on stage, and that was John Warburton, whose turn it was to be crowned the winner of comedian of the year 2004.

John does not do the standard 'I don't have a girl friend' jokes because that would be a lie, he now has a fiancé! After he had been crowned the winner he asked his girlfriend Sarah to marry him, and she said yes!

I doubt though that John will fall into the trap of 'take my wife' jokes or mother in law jokes because he is far to talented for that. Congratulations twice to John Warburton.
