Badly Drawn Boy

Bady Drawn Boy: a song for Sudan

By Richard Turner
He's a got a big woolly hat and a heart to match... When Oxfam asked Badly Drawn Boy to donate a song to their new Sudan appeal album, he didn't hesitate. Richard Turner talked to Damon in his Chorlton yard to talk about his Song for Sudan.

Badly Drawn Boy on:

..his song for Sudan: The track I’m contributing is a song called Celebrate which came out on a Twisted Nerve compilation so it’s pretty rare, not many people heard it, and I thought it was an appropriate song to add to this cause.

..why he chose Celebrate: It’s a basic sentiment about celebrating and being together really… ‘we’re having the time of our lives’, is one of the lines… applied to this situation it’s obviously ironic but the hope I’ve got is that with people like Oxfam bringing people together, there is something to celebrate, because without them, a lot more people would be dying. There is a change being made. It’s too little, too late as usual, but you can’t not do it because of that.

..why he got involved: the news broke about Sudan, and I saw that on the TV, so just to be able to do something, even if it’s very small that contributes to raising awareness and raising funds is like the least you can do. It’s a privileged position to be in really that you get asked to be involved in things like this.

..seeing TV pictures from Sudan: I suppose that now I’m an adult with my own kids it jarred me in a different way. Just the pictures generally, especially when you see children,  there’s men and women of all ages, suffering from what’s going on, about two million people suffering, I think and 50,000 dead, so when you see that and you see helpless children, particularly those images, they’re unwatchable almost... For me, I feel lucky that I’ve even got the chance to do something that will directly help.

..his message to his fans:One of the reasons that Oxfam asked me to do it, is that I’m an artist that people might want to hear… it’s a good song, it’s a song that I really like that I chose to put on Songs for Sudan, so I hope maybe a few of my fans will take the time to download this record... You don’t really have to delve into your pockets these days, it’s an abstract thing, just press a few buttons, and you’ve contributed to a good cause. Please try and buy it.

Have Your Say

Alan Fisher
Its great to see the number of people who have written songs for sudan. My wife and I have also written and recorded a song to this end called Western Man. Bill Latham (sir cliff richards manager) has heard the number and has said that he thinks it it was strong enough to form part of an appeal. But how can we find the right contacts to persue this.....any ideas Alan

australian school girl
i come from a very expensive school and have everything i need and so does many of my school friends. it is so sad to think of what others have to put up with and how we dont even think about how lucky we are. i hope things get better and i am doing as much as i can, same with our school, chapel and my family.
