The story says that a long time ago, an ethnic group attempted to kill all the Fukien-Chinese. The Chinese were frightened and fled into a forest which was surrounded by sugarcanes. They stayed in the jungle until the 8th day of Chinese New Year when their enemies had gone.

On the 9th of the original Chinese New year, The Fukien-Chinese went home and re-celebrated their Chinese New year.

Mrs Yap Chee Chieng, a migrant from Fukien, China said, "My parents have celebrated this special day since I was a kid. We put sugarcanes in front of our house on this day as remembrance of the legend. We believe that the sugarcanes had hidden and protected our ancestors from enemies."

The Fukien-Chinese prepare roasted pork, cakes, vegetables and fruits as thanks to God. All the family members should arrive at home before 12 o'clock to count down the day coming. Friends will also be invited to join the celebration.
