About Gangs

Chillin's had lots of reaction to the special report on gangs.
Lots of you feel it's a problem and wanna talk about it.

What d'you reckon? Tell us using the form below ( you don't have to give your name).

i think that it is rediculous that police have to carry machine guns round moss side, how has the gang problem got so bad

half of these guys arent in gangs they've just got a bunch of mates who they hang about with and they like to think of themselves as part of a gang.
being in a gang isnt just about hanging on the streets and having a couple of fights every week.
im in with salford iknow guys with the gooch and doddinton im not mates with them but i got respect for them and u ask them if walkin down the street and fearin death is nice and u know the answer. thats wot being a gangster is not the crap some of yous is sayin

All these people who say they're in gangs don,t know what is like to living in area where there is a shootin every other day.
try living in a area like moss side, longsight, levenshulme and gorton these are areas that are getting worse all the time.

Makes me sad to read all this c**p, same vicious circle where-ever you look.
I wanted to go to England, not now. Now I know its gonna be the same bull we have here. Except here kids die every day, gunned down in innocence while gang elders talk nonsense. Its the gang elders who are weak, insecure and pathetic. Break the cycle it sucks for ever.

respect from Chardinay and Chinzano
:
u ave 2 b in a gang nowdays if u wanna b safe, our gang stick up 4 each other and makes sure every member is well protected. We ave a fight almost every day but only coz were stickin up 4 each other, it's always nessary 2 stick up 4 u and ur crew. the lads we hang around wiv r solid and no 1 messiz wiv em except 4 idiots who like hospital food. uz girls only go wiv the lads in our crew other wise they'll knock the lad were sein out. It's part of life get wiv it!

"Where I live you have to be in a gang man...it ain't safe to be on your own know what I'm sayin?
You can't be on the streets by yourself 'cos that makes you vulnerable man - there's too many people who wanna make trouble for you."

"I'm worried about the little brothers 'cos it's them that seem to be the ones who want to get into gangs and guns and that...I have a cousin who's twelve and he's been told that his life will be easy if he does things for this gang on his estate."

"I've been in a gang since I was 10.
I work for my crew and I respect them. This is my family you know we look out for each other.
I don't expect people to understand me and what I do, but this is my life man and it's how it's worked out.
I've been in jail and it was no big deal I got on with it you know when I came out my mum didn't want me back so I live with my crew now.
I got money and I make my own way.I don't miss my mum and my old family 'cos I have this one. This is real for me.
I know that it might get dangerous man but it's the choice you make.
I made my choice.
Respect."

"I'm in a gang 'cos I wanna be safe and popular...I don't wanna be different."

"You don't understand man...it's too hard to be on your own...you go to school scared and you go out on the streets scared. If someone sez they're gonna hurt you...they mean it...they don't mean they're gonna just hit you they mean they're gonna put you in hospital."

"I like bein' in a gang I know I'm gonna be protected. The lads who run our crew look after the younger ones - especially the girls - we know that when we go out we're not gonna get hassle - especially from other lads.
You do worry as a girl about other lads from other gangs 'cos they come onto you knowing that it's gonna cause trouble."

"I went out with a boy who wasn't from my area and it caused a load of trouble. His gang came up to where I live and started a fight with our lads - they brought girls as well - the police came and it was really frightenin' I had to finish with him."

"You don't understand what it's like to be a kid nowdays - bein' a teenager is hard.
You get your head blagged all the time from everybody - teachers , parents other kids.
I don't wanna go to school 'cos it's too much pressure...I feel good when I'm with me homies...safety in numbers you know..."

"Girls have their own gangs now and they fight like lads. There's a girl at my school and she's just been excluded for stabbin' someone with a pen...but I know she carries a knife when she's out.
I get on with her but I wouldn't want to fall out with her....I'm in a small gang...well it's just a group of mates really but I suppose you could call it a gang...."

"Everyone round here carries a weapon man...you have to..it don't mean you're gonna use it - but you might have to know what I mean?"

"I don't wanna be in a gang but I'm scared to be on my own - at our school there's loads of bullyin' you get picked on if you don't have the right Rockports or stuff and I got laughed at the other day 'cos I had a supermarket's own name crisps and not Walkers..it's stupid but it's just the way it is."

"Race is a problem with gangs where I live not blacks against whites so much but Asians against everybody else...you can't go out with an Asian boy - but I do have Asian friends."

"It's about bein' safe we get so much trouble where I live just 'cos we're Asian - people don't even ask what country we come from they just say oh he's Asian so he must be a trouble maker.
I'm in a gang so that when I get attacked I can fight back."

"I think it has alot to do with America and what young people see on the television.
I'm not in a gang 'cos I'm a mosher but I suppose when people see us hangin' out at the Triangle they think we're a gang.
Actually I suppose I am in a gang kind of...we do have our chains and that and I suppose some people might use them if they had to protect themselves."

"I think it's really sad.
I'm not in a gang and I'm not very popular either.
That's because I don't want to be like the people in my school who make people's life miserable because they don't have the right shoes for example.
It's really pathetic.
I don't have that many friends but the friends I do have are like me.
it's really sad that being young is so much pressure."

"Look man it's necessary ok?
Don't make it like it's a big thing...you wanna be safe?
You want people to respect you this is the way it has to be.
Would I carry a gun? I can't answer that man."

"If there's a group of you you're a gang.People hate teenagers...they don't understand them...but then we don't understand them..."
