The
workshops are part of a three year project by Dance Northwest which
is designed to raise the awareness, profile and participation in
traditional African and Caribbean dance forms in the North West.
The
project includes work with schools, colleges, community groups,
and training for professionals, performances and audience development.
African's
People Dance worker Tracey Gunn says, "The majority of it is
easy to pick up, especially if you've been involved in dance styles
like street dance and break dance."
The
Manchester
Workshops will cater for all levels of dance experience, (including
none at all!), and begins with a pilot workshop on 3 July by Jackie
Guy.
Jackie
is a choreographer of international standing and his work blends
authentic traditional form with elements of ritual and contemporary
dance technique, to create a unique and vibrant dance form.
As
former Artistic Director of Kokuma Dance Theatre, he achieved the
Black Dance Award for outstanding choreography and production.
Deb
Ashby of the Dance Northwest Directorate says, "African dance
is quite a lively form of dance and has some of its roots in dance
forms like hip-hop, so there'll be familiar moves."
