I think the B of the Bang is quite an simple yet imaginative idea - it really does look extravagant. Though, at a cost of £1.5 million or more realistically £1,500,000 it is a complete waste of money and time. It could be favorably and fairly used where it is most needed e.g. into Cancer Research or treatment of blind children, instead of using it to build a sculpture. "The designers could have at least made it move..." A disappointment

i love it! i dont often like modern art/sculptures at first site but it is .....wow!
Barbara Haydon, Oxford
Absolutely terrific sculpture

I think it's a nice idea to have Manchester's own 'Landmark' although I think that there is an excessive amount of money being spent on something that doesn't mean as much as it is worth.
Nigel Townill - southampton
With so many people on the breadline, and so many people suffering in poor countries. Why in the name of sanity are we spending our money on something that has no real worth/benefit for anyone.
Noyan in London
Makes us Londoners envious. It's a stunning, explosive, and exciting piece of art. Lucky Manchester!
jon from glossop
i think that it is a good idea but you should make it less flexable in the wind
Ivar Nelsen, Melbourne, Australia
Bloody Fantastic - how could anyone think otherwise
andrew bucknall manc
another great addition to my great city.makes me proud
Dave Bennett Little Hulton
Didnt like it whilst I watched it being constructed when going to home games, but i have now changed my opinion I think it is a awesome and very relevent for Manchester piece of Art and well done to Sheffield for the engineering
Steve, Oldham
Bloody marvellous!
As well as celebrating Linford Christie's comment about being out of the blocks before the b of the bang, it can also be taken as a reminder that Manchester was the first splitting of the atom took place in Manchester.
Neil Reavey Macclesfield
I think it's yet another thing manchester can be proud of. It adds evidence to the suggestion that manchester is the Barcelona of the UK. Famed for its innovative art and architecture.
gareth naylor devon
Modern and uplifting approach to art that will improve the areas cultural development and hopefully its surrounding area will be improved to an extent that its sky peirceing spears will blend into its background.
David Margetson Kirkland Lake Ontario Canada
I spent the past ten weeks in the shadow of B of the bang. I think it is a very impressive sculpture. I am glaad that the artist has kept it in the natural metal and not shiny aluminium or painted white as some critics thought. It gives a raw impoing look to the East Manchester landscape. The way it tilts and appears to defy gravity reminds me of the cutting edge development that Manchester is doing to itself. the re-development of the city is amazing and the public space that is being created is excellent and Bof the Bang only enhances the surrounding space. The spikes reflect the towers of the stadium and it reflects the all the energy that takes place in the stadium and the city. I love it.
Mel in Brixton
I am surprised anyone would be against it. It is both stunning and as Paul from Manchester points out, incredibly important for giving a sense of identity beyond the county boundaries to a very important city that is currently doing very well economically compared to the 80s and early 90s. Manchester need and deserves a highly-talked-about landmark like Bilbao needs and deserves the Guggenheim
Becca Irwin Lancaster
I think that the sculpture is a great idea - it gives the north west an identity like the angel of the north and nelsons column. It is a great piece of art and is very extravagant - however i would be abit wary of standing underneath it - it looks rather lethal!
Steven Leeds
Waste of money
Leese Manchester
Looks awful during daylight, but great when illuminated at night. Tourists generally go site seeing in summer or during daylight- is anyone really going to get to see this looking ok- or will it be remembered as an eyesore????
Alexandra, Hamburg
It is absolutely stunning! You should be proud!
Chris - East Manchester
It's fatastic and puts our bit of the City on the national map. The bad comments are only ... envy. Well done Manchester for having the b**ls to put it there.
carole i manchester
I think it si magnificent. A great addition to the skyline.
catherine london
Its magnificent.Congratulations Manchester, you have the best piece of art in Britain.
david from birmingham
I wish they would build something like this in Birmingham, Manchester has changed somuch, it's now a global, modern city, that has been well thought out unlike here in Birmingham where im convinced they actually paint everything grey to make us depressed. Manchester is what you get if planning is thought through. Birmingham is what you get when you have a sulplus of concrete and a brummie hating depressive arcitect. Really birmingham has to be the worst designed city on the planet. Everyone like geometric parrerms, symetry, and therefore i can not imagine anyone not liking the b of the bang,- its cool in anyones eyes,- the only issue is the cost, and envy. Lets start a campaign to tear down birmingham and do it properly here!!!
Maggie, Manchester City Centre
Its awesome!! great to have such a spectacular piece of modern art in Manchester!
Gareth J Jones
It is the most hideous thing I have ever seen.
Alyson Stringer, Garston
I love B of the Bang, I'm from Liverpool but I prefer Manchester it's so much better.
Jennifer Hayes
I see the Bang every week and I think it is brilliant, I love it. I don't normally like contemporary sculpture as it is usually far too minimalist and bland, but I find this structure inspiring. I just wish I had taken photos as it was being built!
jacob and sarah year 3 st.brigid'snrc primary east
I like the b of the bang because it is nice to look at and it is beautifel.
Clive, Oldham.
A fantastic piece of engineering, beautiful. Why do businesses want to come to Manchester?. Because she is THE City to be in (I love her).
Tors, Sportcity
Its looks great and I'm proud to look out on it everyday, but why keep it rusty? it would look so much better if they painted it silver or white to match the stadium or Asda?
Greg, Fallowfield
Any new piece of sculpture is great for a city and the impressivness of this one will make a superb focal point! It will increase publicity for the city and look bloody amazing!
allisons talybridge
its mad but great how it catches your attension as you go past it what a great fun piece of art and what skills and workmen ship has gone into it 10/10
Barrie in Gorton
If thay leave it rusty it will look awful.Paint it silver like a the original press release.
Jacqui Gorton MANCHESTER
i THINK IT IS AN EYESORE IT LOOKS LIKE A LOAD OF RUSTY METAL. wHY COULDN'T WE HAVE A BRONZE STATUE AS THE ONE IN THE STADUIM ALREADY. iT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE INTERESTING. THE MONEY COULD HAVE BEEN PUT TO BETTER USE IN AND AROUND MANCHESTER
Jackie, Droylsden
B of the Bang will be spectacular. It is fantastic that we should have such a piece of art in the east of Manchester.
Eric Jackson, Urmston
I think that it will be stunning when complete and the angle of incline is bizarre! Very useful for visiting fans too. You used to know that you were approaching an away ground when you could see the floodlight pylons, this is a really special landmark.Do we know if it will be illuminated at night?
mandy, manchester
pass it every day, it just gets bigger and better, well done
Mark Hammill, London
I cant wait to see the sculpture all finished. Having visited manchester for the Commonwealth Games , they were such a success they should be rightly commemorated and this is a great way to do it. The B of the Bang will help show how Manchester is regenerating itself. I just hope the proposed casino and 10 storey hotel proposed nearby are not too close to the sculpture. The reason the Sydney Opera House, Nelsons Column, Statue of Liberty and Leaning Tower of Pisa, work as icons of there city is because other buildings are kept a respectful distance away. The B of the Bang wont look as impressive if dwarfed by a big hotel or other buildings. The lowry centre looked great until it was surrounded by an outlet mall, multiplex and multistorey carpark!! Now so many great views of the lowry are gone and it looks less impressive. The city council and New East Manchester must make sure there is space and long distance views of the new B of the Bang sculpture mustnt be crowded. Please give it space to breathe!! Less is more. There is plenty of space so I just hope it will be given the respect it deserves when further development follows.
manchester becky
it looks like old pipes it doesnt look like art iv seen alot better sculptures i give it a 1/10
Danny (Stockport)
Fantastic, I Can't Wait Until It's Completed.. I Remember Walking To Maine Road And Catching A Glimse Of The Top Of The Kippax, Now Imagine Thousands Of Fans On A Matchday walking Towards Not Only A Fantastic Stadium, But Past The UK's Biggest Statue That Is Sure To Be A Historical And Symbolic Mounument Of The New Manchester. Big Blue Danny J
John Kilgariff, Manchester
I think the sculpture represents manchester fantastically, it is a dynamic and exciting piece of art that should be welcomed rather than bemoaned as a 'waste of money...' blah blah blah.... I'm a mancunian who is more than happy to see some of my council tax spent on something so remarkable, which demonstrates manchester is one of the most progressive cities in the country!
russell jacques
At last a bit of culture, i think once finished it will look spectacular, all those people saying the hate it - when finsished will be boasting living near it, its nice the way it reflects the explosion of rejuvinisation of the area as an explosion of jobs and prosperity! well done manchester city council. I hope theres more to come!
axel, manchester
i wish people stopped going on about art being a waste of money. there are much bigger wastes going on every day. wastes that kill people, like wars, arms trade, just to mention a few. if we stopped those, we could fund a lot more, apart from art projects.
andrew in leeds
what will happen when its covered in rubbish and plastic bags? will it be as pretty then? what about when kids try and climb it and cover it in lovely drawings?
wendy in halifax
biggest waste of money i have ever seen!!!!!
Martin Richards ,Oldham
I saw it this morning, or part of it. It will be fantastic
Anthony Browne Colwyn Bay
Well done, Fantastic! Congratulations for having the conviction to carry through this project. I'll be there soon!

i think it is pretty
Serge in Amsterdam
I'm an artist living in a city that has a lot of art, both in museums and in the street. And I would desperately like to see B of the Bang in Amsterdam! Call it Bamsterdam. A fantastic and daring piece. I've never been to Manchester, but when the sculpture is standing I'm on the first plane. Who talks about money when you think of how much interest and excitement this sculpture will bring for decades to come.
Ace Riley manchester
I love the concept of it its just not right for the area we should be celebrating local people who made the area what it is today "the miners who died and the soldiers who lived local in the last wars and the steel indusry that grew up in east manchester not the commonwealth games the stadium does that why celebrate it twice??nice but money wasted in my view.
ace..
mick from Sheffield
I think it looks great,it's made in Sheffield
Anesilem - Manchester
I think its great that successes like the games are celebrated and remembered, this will represent a symbol that Manchester has a lot more to offer than just shopping, and that we should all be proud that we can pull together as a city to celebrate these successes.
Barbara Vaughan Levenshulme
A waste of money. Surely they could have found something to benefit the young folk of Manchester, such as more sporting arenas in and around the many deprived areas.
Tom in Preston
The money could have been spent better.
Dave Bradley Manchester
my last comment griping about Piccadilly was beside the point.
I like this sculpture more and more and it will look brilliant when lit up by at night. I hope it will always be lit up at night. I would perhaps like a different name for it, perhaps "The Northern Burst".
Can you let us know how on earth it will be held in place, rain and shine (and storm) ?
Dave Bradley
I think I like bang but the biggest single thing that could be done to improve Manchester would be to level Piccadilly Sq, it's a concrete dump. It just goes to show that the same crackpot planners who built the Arndale and Hulme Crescents are still around, winning competitions, fooling people with razzle dazzle ideas and glossy broschures of their junk and the rest of us have once again to wait 20 years for it to be demolished.
Paul, Manchester
When The Angel of the North was first unveiled people hated it. A few years later the locals have taken it to their hearts. 'B' will have the same effect, once the people of Manchester realise the importance that landmarks play in maintaining an international identity and generating tourism (think Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, London Eye). Aside from Old Trafford Manchester has no real structures that say 'Manchester'. Hopefully things will now change. Fantastic idea.
phil
It's beautiful - like a frozen spark. All this glass and steel that's been sprouting up in Manchester would be complimented by planting 100s of trees around the city. We would all benefit by setting aside chillout zones of greenery around the centre instead of the Telly Tubby lawn at Piccadilly (so called) Gardens.
John Hobson CANADA
This will be a Hazard to Birds.
David Simmons in Leigh
Fantastic Idea,I wonder if the people of Barcelona complained as much about that 'crazy paving stuff' Gaudi put in?
I have little to no time for this Manchester vs Birmingham argument. Suffice to say it's good to see things being developed outside of London.
With a little more of this Manchester could rightfully become the Barcelona of Northern Europe. Why not?
It's already given the world computers, industrial innovation, art and culture. I'm sure there's much more to give.
Jeff in Bangor
Saw the 'Bang' on telly last night, what a beautiful imaginative idea. I actually understood what Heatherwick was on about.A clever and talented young man with an amazin' future.Great to see true British engineering skills at their best being employed in the manufacture, unlike the London Eye.Good luck to Heatherwick and Manchester.I can't wait to visit Manchester when it's in place.
Bob Scratchett
It's grate. I luv it! Still only half as tall as Niall Quinn!
