The volunteers worked with Manchester designers Tracey Webster, Ruth Northall and Sophie Zadeh to create the tapestry which measures 8 metres by 3 metres.

Cotton and other textiles were chosen as the art media to represent the heritage of the North West.

The tapestry shows eight figures who represent the ethnic diversity of Manchester and the North West.

It is made up of thousands of scraps of fabric each decorated individually by the volunteers who made up Crew 2002. The faces of the figures have been created using photographs of the volunteers.

The tapestry will be on display at the People's History Museum until 26th September and will be presented in a way that both sides of the tapestry will be visible.

In a nutshell:
2002 Volunteers Tapestry - People's History Museum, Bridge Street, Manchester. Until 26th September 2004.
Admission: £1 (Free on Fridays)
