Jim Medway: Drawings
Manchester Art Gallery until 16th November 2003
updated 13/09/03
Untitled (Hairdressers) 2003 pen and watercolour on board - © Jim Medway Manchester artist Jim Medway is well known for his cartoon style paintings and drawings of 'alley cats', which are witty observations on the urban life of the city.

Richard Fair has been to see the exhibition.

I know people love cats and I know that there's lots of other people out there who love cats. But what would they make of cat people?

Jim Medway's look at the "moshers, townies and wet children" gives an unusual angle on some of those kids who seem to spend more time hanging around the fountain in Piccadilly Gardens than they do in school.

The drawings capture moments around Piccadilly that I too have witnessed, minus the surreal cat characters.

Take a look at his large observation of the fountains in Piccadilly and you'll find yourself lost in a world of realism accepting the felines for what they are, cat moshers, townies and wet.

Study the cat (guy) wearing the Burger King paper cup cuffs and find yourself drawn into his own fantasy world of a superhero as he poses for the artist.

So does it work? Yes it does, for me at least.

Trying to mix real life observation with cartoons isn't easy, yet Jim Medway has managed to capture the mood of Piccadilly Gardens through the antics of these cat people who look anything but out of place in Manchester.
