Starting Lines
© Rommi Smith - April 2002

Dreams in the blocks
before the
spark of the
start gun.

A bright flint for wishes,
butterflying
in the fast lane.

Behind the white line
hopes
for a home run
dance with the clock
tango to countdown.

Stopwatch to culture
ticket to showdown?

Jet set.
On track.
Whose medal is it anyway?
Parallel lines
being drawn on the podium,
between winner of medals and
hurdler of life's destination
towards finishing lines.

And the measurement of a smile
and its architecture?
Distance and colour?
Something in the people,
or, something in the water?

Drum of Uganda
Jazz in St Lucia
the beat of the baton -
the phrase
between
strangers.

In florescent heartbeats
Bearing time to
A skyline of torchlights
Playing midnight's own game

Home and destination.
Meanings and beginnings.
Belonging's,
the bridge
between home and
distance.
