Penzance will be celebrating the arrival of the Baton on Monday, 18 June 2002.

Did you know...
The town of Penzance is named 'Pen Sans' in the ancient Cornish language, meaning 'Holy Headland'.
The arrival of midsummer is celebrated with the Golowan Festival and Mazey Day which includes traditions such as decorating the town with greenery, the ancient Serpent Dance through the streets and the election of a Mock Mayor.
Sir Humphry Davy, inventor of the miners safety lamp, was born on 17 December 1778 in Penzance.
A pier and fort were built in the 17th century to protect the area against pirates, long before Gilbert & Sullivan wrote their famous operetta!
The Dolphin Inn, nor far from the Barbican, is reputed to be the first place in Britain where tobacco was smoked.
