Did you know...
Newcastle stands on the site of a Roman settlement, Pons Aelius.
Rope making, shipbuilding and glass making were among the early trades to develop in Newcastle but the most important was the mining and export of coal.
In 1265 it was decided to build town walls to protect Newcastle from the raids of invading Scots. When completed the walls extended for over two miles around the town and were never less than 7 feet thick and up to 25 feet high.
Newcastle FC goes by the nickname 'The Magpies'.
