Did you know...
Captain James Cook, sailor and explorer, was born in Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough is relatively modern since it was only founded in 1829.
Mydilsburgh is the earliest recorded form of Middlesbrough's name and dates to Saxon times but was still only a farmstead of twenty five people as late as 1801.
The Transporter Bridge (built in 1911) transports cars and passengers across the Tees to Hartlepool in a cable car. Newport Bridge (built in 1934) was the first vertical lift bridge in England.
