Leicester was founded in AD 50 as the Roman Ratae Coritanorum. Leicester is an English corruption of the Latin "a fort on the river Leire".
It developed as a centre of the hosiery trade after the stocking frame was introduced in the late 17th century.
Film director Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons. My Beautiful Laundrette, The Snapper) was born in Leicester, as was footballer Gary Lineker.
Both Sir David Attenborough and his brother Lord Richard Attenborough attended Wyggeston Boy's School in Leicester.
The first-ever performance of Handel's `Messiah' in an English church took place at Church Langton in Leicestershire.
