Did you know...
Leofric, Earl of Mercia and husband of Lady Godiva, founded a Benedictine priory in Coventry in 1043.
Coventry was the target of a massive German air raid on 14–15 November 1940 in which 550 people were killed, and over 60,000 buildings were destroyed.
The first British production car was built in Coventry in 1896.
In the 15th and 16th centuries Coventry was famous for a superior blue dye. From this was coined the phrase "As true as Coventry Blue", referring to someone of the highest integrity, or nowadays just 'true blue'.
Famous people from Coventry include poet and writer Philip Larkin and Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine.
