Life along the region's rivers

Rivers

Look North has been taking a trip along six of the region's rivers, and meeting some of the people who live and work there.

The region's rivers have helped shape the area. Look North has been examining life along these rivers in six features.

Week 6: River Tyne (20 September)

The Tyne is the final river featured in the series and as well as looking at some of the bridges which cross the river, we also acknowledge the music which has accompanied this series.

"Waxwing" are a band of students who have provided their own compositions for all our rivers features.

Week 5: River Esk (13 September)

The Esk is a river celebrated for its sea trout and salmon but it is a rather private river and most people only know it at crossing points.

We talk to an painter who explains why the river is a favourite with artists and we meet Gerry Skelton from the North Yorkshire Moors railway which runs trains alongside the river.

Week 4: River Eden (6 September)

In 2005 flooding devastated Carlisle when the River Eden burst its banks.

We meet the man in charge of the flood defences as well as the team from Newcastle University monitoring the Upper Eden for river levels, water quality and rainwater.

Week 3: River Wear (30 August)

The River Wear has a proud industrial history from lead mining in Killhope through to the shipyards of Sunderland.

We find out how important water was in the mining process and hear from Pallion Engineering's Managing Director Peter Callaghan about the companies history on the Wear.

Canoeists on the River Coquet

Week 2: River Coquet (23 August)

The River Coquet is used by a variety of people for leisure activities from fishing to canoeing.

Vic (Victoria) Brown helps run the Coquet Canoe Club.

Week 1: River Tees (16 August)

In the first week we took a trip along the River Tees and met a variety of people including Les Wright from the Tees Cottage pumping station.

In the mid-19th Century the pumping station piped water to the people of Darlington.

Now it is kept in working order by a group of enthusiasts.
