 Abbie Thorrington

Cash lifelines for athletes

As the clock ticks to the 2012 London Olympic Games, lots of talented young athletes are training hard to make the grade.

The physical demands are enormous but for many financial stretch is almost as big a drain.

For many young athletes, like Essex University student Abbie Thorrington from Ipswich, it's the parents who take the financial punches. Triathlete Abbie is training hard to win a place to compete in 2012.

SportsAid in Suffolk is offering scholarships worth £6,000 to 12 up and coming sportsmen and women in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In return for the scholarship, the 12 Suffolk athletes will be asked to be ambassadors, encouraging others to take part in sport.
