Olympic handover celebrations

Dozens of places across the eastern region will be raising the Olympic Handover Flag on Sunday August 24, marking London's official start as hosts for the 2012 games.

New big screens in Kettering and Norwich will give people the chance to watch the Visa London 2012 Party live, with performances from 10 top artists.

With ceremonies right across the region, all Look East viewers should have the chance to mark this slice of Olympic history.

The flag raising ceremonies will follow the live broadcast of London Mayor Boris Johnson's flag raising at 2.30pm.

Buckinghamshire

Milton Keynes: From 2pm to 4pm at Exchange Square, there will be skateboard, BMX and street dance demonstrations and opportunities to take part in a range of sporting and cultural activities whilst local DJs and artists showcase their talents. Handover Flag to be raised by the mayor at 2.30pm.

Hertfordshire

Stevenage: Local sports clubs will parade flag in a relay across the town to the Flag Ceremony at council's offices with potential 2012 hopefuls. Further activity through the afternoon.
Royston/Hitchin: Opening Ceremony at Hitchin Leisure Centre and an unveiling of the flag at Royston leisure centre.

Northamptonshire

Kettering: Big screen broadcasting Visa London 2012 and flag raising in Wicksteed Park with sports stars and potential future Olympians plus interactive workshops as well as archery, badminton, cycling, rowing and tri golf.


Essex

Benfleet: Hadleigh Farm Mountain Bike venue - public engagement event with question and answer session.
Basildon: Raising the flag with aspiring you athletes, live music and balloon release.
Castle Point: Raising flag outside council offices before proceeding to Hadleigh Farm at 2pm.
Uttlesford: Flag to be raised.
Braintree: Flag raising and procession, live performances 2.30pm.
Chelmsford: Mayor to raise flag at Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre. Free activity all day to under 16s, 2.30pm.
Colchester: In partnership with Essex Cricket Club and Essex County Council. Flag will be raised at Essex v. Glamorgan cricket match.
Southend: Weekend water and culture festival, watersports, carnival, fireworks, live site screening and flag raising.
Harlow: Flag raising, Chinese lion display, African music workshop, free Chinese food 3.45pm.
Maldon: Fly the flag, children will have the opportunity to try different Olympic events.
Rayleigh: Chamber of Trade family fun day on Monday August 25.
Southend: Estuary Baton handover and flag raising, shown on big screen.
Clacton-on-Sea: Flag raising at Clacton Leisure Centre by athletes, free leisure facilities for two hours.

Cambridgeshire

Grafham Water: Flag raising. Charity, Sailability provides opportunity for people with disabilities to sail will attend. Launch of the  People's Record - a touring exhibition of people's thoughts and memories throughout the four-year Olympia, 2-30pm.
Ely: Ely Paradise Centre celebrates with the Cultural Olympiad World Cup, The EC Crossbar Challenge, taster sports, art sessions, official Flag Raising, Song for Ely, entertainment and stalls.
Cambridge: Mayor raising flag at swimming pool, inflatable swim for 50 youngsters, run route activity on Parkers Piece, 4pm.
Duxford: Flag raising at the Imperial War Museum.

Peterborough: Flag raising by the city's mayor at 1pm on Monday August 25 as part of an afternoon celebrations at the City of Peterborough Games organised by Peterborough Athletics Club.


Norfolk

Norfolk Celebrating Talent Roadshow, open top bus to Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Whitlingham.
Norwich: Big screen broadcasting Visa London 2012 plus street entertainers, sing the nation, sport activity, family fun day, Chinese cultural activity, Lord Mayor flag raising 2.30pm.
Great Yarmouth: Touring Olympic bus, flag raising by mayor/mayoress, volleyball championship 2.30pm.

Suffolk

Ipswich: Community Carnival parade, music, food, entertainment, flag raising 2.30pm, and launch of 'lap of honour' project documenting Olympic and Paralympic heritage of Suffolk - Stanley Cox to attend (took part in 1948 Games) and unveil first Suffolk SportsAid Scholarship recipients.
Felixstowe: Flag raising at Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Club by town mayor, Olympic American Tennis Tournament.
Lowestoft: Flag raisin at the most easterly point in England.

Bedfordshire


Bedford: Raising the Flag Family Fun Day at Bedford International Athletic Stadium with local club athletics, marching band, dance group performances, flag raising at 2.30pm. Raising of Olympic Flag Bedford Council chairman at Council Chamber 3.30pm.
Luton: Summer Festival culminating with Luton Celebration of Culture Luton live performances, interactive displays, celebrity guests, Olympic exhibition and flag raising, 2.30pm.
