Biking blow for Essex

A country park in Essex is out of the running as a venue for the London 2012 Olympics because it is not hilly enough to challenge the riders.

After two years of planning, inspectors from the International Cycling Union (UCI) visited the park and declared it too flat to challenge mountain bikers.

Inspectors approved the site in 2004 but now say it is an evolving sport and and what was considered good enough then is not enough now by the senior course designer.

Officials are hoping a new site for mountain biking will be found in Essex.

County councillor Stephen Castle, an eastern region organiser for the 2012 Olympics, said every effort was being made to keep the event in Essex and other locations were being explored.

Mountain biking was introduced to the Olympics at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
