Blue badge cheats

The procedure for handing out disabled parking badges in Cambridgeshire is to be reviewed after a BBC investigation showed it was open to abuse.

BBC Look East reporter Mike Liggins - who is not disabled - was able to get a badge with just one phone call and a few lies.

No-one checked with his GP and the blue badge arrived on his doormat a month later.

When he revealed how he came by his parking badge, the council said it would re-examine its procedures on checking applications.

Pat Harding, director of customer service at the council, said: "I think with any process you will get one or two that slip through the net.

"The other way of doing it is to make it horrendously complicated and difficult for the very people who need it and evidence suggests that they don't apply."

Mike Liggins' blue badge has been destroyed.
