Another truck turned over?

What are the odds? One on it's side in a ditch last trip and one on it's side in the desert. I wonder if you've seen any other similarities to this trip and the last, or is it completely and totally different? Hopefully, it's just as good as the last one. Hope you're all still enjoying it.

No winscreen here ...

My current motorcycle is a naked SV650, meaning no fairings to speak of, and thus my "windscreen" is about 3" tall - really there just for looks. Earplugs are great, or earphones for long distance rides when a bit of music is nice. Anything to stop that ringing in your ears after 200+km of riding. Without any fairings, riding down the freeway (motorway) is quite something when the 100+kph wind is pushing you around like a rag-doll. However, if I wanted to be fully comfortable I would be in a car now wouldn't I?
------
Quetion for Claudio : How is the sand, wind and general muck treating your camera gear? Any difference between this and the Dakar?

Stay safe! Richard T.

Saddle Beads

Have you tried using the beaded saddle covers? I've heard that they can help with ventilation and circulation on long rides. Seems like maybe you could find some in Africa or find something that could be modified into a saddle cover! Good luck guys! You are in our thoughts!

Shift and Change!

Keep shifting your position if you can. If you're going on a long straight road with no gear changes, then shift your bum back onto the pillion seat, just for a change and to stop your muscles cramping up. It'll also simulate riding a big fat chopper! :-D

Long Way Home

Rode my new KTM up from London to North East Scotland a couple of years ago. Not a great distance, but it was February and there was the worst weather - snow, hail, fog etc. Went service hopping all the way home: Hot drink..pee, hot drink...pee! I don't think there's such a thing as a totally comfortable long distance ride. If the thrill doesn't outweigh the discomfort ...then buy a car. Good to see your video message at 'Donny' MotoGP. Ride safe guys.

I've done some +600km day's on my KTM 640 (no disrespect!!)... when my legs feel like rocks I hang them straight down off the pegs. Keeps your ego in check too, mostly because you look like an imbecile! Although, it's not possible when you're riding in treacherous conditions.

Soreness

Ewan and Charley, please be careful on those roads. Stetching helps me and a heating pad, but it's so hot where you are a heating pad is out of the question. I use advil to reduce swelling in my joints. I bet a ice pack would feel good, but it wouldn't last long in the heat. Stay alert, take your time, and above all stay safe.

Well, you've gone the Long Way Round and now the Long Way Down, what's next? When you think of the places you have visited on either trip, which is the first one that comes into your mind and why?
Kepp riding safe and have the time of your lives. I await with anticipation of seeing all about it when it is aired on TV.

Techniques for comfort ...

Don't the animal riders in that part of the world show some preference for sheep skins with the wool still on? I like the beaded seat covers one sees taxi drivers with sometimes. Bit of a massage and allows air to circulate. I've a gel seat on my bike and it’s the 'bee’s knees' for my climate. I think by the time you reach land's end in S. Africa it'd be cool if your bikes looked as if they'd gone totally native. John O' Groats = absolutely industrial world high tech to S. Africa = Lawrence of Arabia-esque in appearence. :-)

Gday all,
Hey Charley, just watched your "Race to Dakar" DVD. Awesome! You blokes should come back to Australia and do a Cape to Cape trip. There's heaps of challenging tracks the "Whole Way Round" There you go there's the title for the Aus trip.
Just brought the Arai Tour-X helmet you blokes use for my big around Aus trip on my GS1200Adv in Oct. Yeah ear plugs do the trick.
Anyway have fun, good luck to all the team and again looking forward to seeing the DVD. Oh Yeah Russ, I admire your patience mate and the way you calmly deal with problems :)

numb bum

great to see you guys out and about again. My numb bum was instantly cured by an Airhawk seat like you used on the long way round. Why didn't you use them this time?

Cario to Cape

Hi Guys, been there done that, got the t-shirt. Cairo to Cape Town 24 February to 21 April 2007, 13500km. 5 Beemers and one Yamaha XT 660. If you think the roads are bad in Ethiopia, beware first 500km in Kenia, from Mojale to Marsabit. Worst road in the world. Don't fall for the "escort requirement" set by police. No bandits on that road that we know of. We did it on our own, just a effort to make money. We got away by offering the escort a lift on the back of one of the bikes. Advice, take it slow, 30-40 k/h. Pray it doesn't rain. From there roads are fine. Good luck, it's a hell of a trip. Enjoy the local food. Feel free to contact me if you need tips. South African greetings. Louis

What made you decide on Africa?

I followed Long Way Around and enjoyed every second of it! Even bought the DVD & book, fantastic! Really looking forward to seeing Long Way Down. After viewing the series, I emailed you asking whether you would consider touring Africa down to Cape Town (My home town by the way!)Although I can't be responsible for you taking my suggestion seriously as I'm sure 100s of other fans probably made the same suggestion! What made you both decide on this trip?
Try and avoid the local 'bush beer' even though you'll have an enjoyable time drinking the stuff, it'll mess with your bowel system for a week after!
Stay safe!

Sure you know where you are...?

The clip of the overturned truck doesn't seem to be in Ethiopia; it certaily is not anywhere near Addis Ababa! I know because I'm originally from there. And the trucks have Arabic licence plates, not used in Ethiopia. Are you sure this is not in either Djibouti, the Sudan or even Egypt?
