Dealing with the heat

Answering questions along the way is very nice. I was wondering what special equipment you have brought along to help you deal with being exposed to high temperatures for extended periods of time. I rode my bike to Alaska last July and on the way back it was over 50 degrees all the way from Prince George, BC to home in Tucson. Absolute misery I assure you. We have ways of dealing with the heat for us desert biker guys here in Arizona, but curious as to what preparations you two have made. Enjoying the reports so much. Best of luck.

Bike questions!

So, as you've looked at the North/South America trip does that mean you're planning on doing that next? Just houw jealous are you trying to make me??

Apart from the extra 50cc, what are the differences between the 1150 and the 1200GSs? Do you notice the differences? Those Beemers are built like flipping tanks, amazing bikes! (Apart from when Claudio gets on one, obviously, bad luck on breaking down again!)

Oh and thank you for doing Long Way Round, it inspired both me and my boyfriend to become bikers (although he's trying to persuade me to get a car instead as he thinks I'm going to die...!)

African explorers

I know from the Long Way Round that you have read Ted Simon's Jupiter's Travels. Really appropriate for your African trip are two other true motorcycle adventures across Africa. In 1935 two women rode a 600cc Panther motorcycle from Algiers to Cape Town and wrote a fantastic account called The Rugged Road by Theresa Wallach. Then in 1938 two Americans rode two triumph side car rigs from West to East across Africa and wrote about it in the book Three Wheeling Through Africa. I wondered if either Charley or Ewan had read these and been inspired by them. These previous travelers did not have the advantage of a support crew or modern bikes and roads but of course Africa was a different place then. I really enjoy your travels. Keep up the adventures and the great reporting. You are following in the footsteps of other great adventurers and I envy you and respect you very much.

New Challenges

Great to see you out again! I was wondering if you are finding this adventure to be less challenging than Mongolia? Or challenging in different ways? Why does it take so long at the borders? What are they doing that could take 8 hours or more to let you through? Thanks for taking us along with you, you guys crack me up! I try to read your logs and watch your videos during my breaks at work. My co-workers were wondering what I was laughing about. I got them interested in your show too!

I know lone your TV show to them and they get what my passion is all about.

Thanks for elevating our sport in such a fun and entertaining way.

Have you ever though about taking your wife?

Charlie and Ewan,
Not sure if either of you have ever considered about taking your wives on their own bikes? (or if they wanted to)

It's not impossible, my boyfriend was always going alone on an epic journey through West Africa from London to capetown.

3weeks prior to his departure, he asked me to join him and I've never rode a motorbike before in my life!!

But I perserved and learnt how to ride starting in London, and managed to learn even how to ride in the Sahara's deep sand!!!

Just wanted to wish you nice tarmac for the sore bottoms! We are currently in Namibia

What is the one thing you could you absolutely not live without carrying with you on your travels?
P.S. I am a huge fan of your bike shows, I can't wait to see the the "Long way down". As a biker myself, (I ride a FireBlade, but I have also raced motocross bikes in S.A. My first bike was a 80cc Yamaha Miniature Trials bike because my dad was really into Trials events when I was about 8 years old. I really enjoyed the "Long way round" and read the book too, it was great. P.S. Ewan, please wear goggles if Charley is putting gas in your bikes and please grow a beard again, you looked so cool!! LOL. :-)Cheers and good luck on your travels. Cyndi XOXO

IMPORTANT INFO BEFORE HEADING OUT?

You've been through a long preperation and training period before hitting the road. Of all you have learned, what has been MOST HELPFUL to you on this trip? What do you think is most important and advise US (non-biker adventurers too!) to learn (or train) health OR safety-wise before embarking on such a trip? Thank you and ride safe!

Fans from LA

You guys are just terrific - big fan of LWR and my four boys and I are keeping track of this trip daily - you are great role models because you're so honest, genuine and lovely to your families and people you meet - not to mention doing what you love for charity! My 10-year-old Matt had a question about food. How much do you pack ahead and how do you know how much you're going to need, etc. Best of luck to you both!!

Amazing Trip reports

Hi Ewan and Charley!

I'm simply envious of what you guys are doing. So much so that I'm a huge fan of LWR and now... LWD. It really brings out the adventurous bug hidden within every long-distance rider.

At this very moment, I'm dying just waiting for my new 1200GS ADV, and eat some miles with it!

Good luck guys. Have a safe journey!

questions...

What is your favorite part of these trips, either LWR or LWD?? Is it just being on the bike and getting out there to see everything? Is that South to North America trip something you plan to do in a few years time? Is there anything different this time around that is better or worse than before? Do you like posting blogs for us to read, and do you like to read/hear how people are following along? Haha, is this entirely too many questions??

Hi guys

I'm envious !
Have a great time.
I've done a bit of riding (for about 40 years.........)
When you get to Cape Town, you'll want a good pic of the mountain - do us a favour and visit our old house at 17 Ocean Way - the beach is two minutes walk from there, and prime location for pics.
And a good restaurant down the road is called "On the Rocks"
Enjoy !

Great source of inspiration

I must tell you that I bought a R1200GS a few weeks after I saw Long Way Round.

You guys are of a great source of inspiration. A few weeks ago, I did what I call a Small Way Down. From Montreal we went to Tennessee did a part of the Tran-American trail and went back via the Dragon Tail and the Blue Ridge Parkway. More than 5000 km in 9 days. It's nothing compare to Long Way Round but for us it's a nice little adventure.

Here's a picture of us riding in a river in Tennessee:

Hi Ewan and Charley!

I really hope you are able to read this comment! I just wanted to say how excited I am to see your 'Long Way Down' series! I was hooked on your 'Long Way Round' and felt like I was right there with you both...you are great friends and it shows through in your adventures! I have to say I particularly enjoyed Ewan yelling at the 16 year old just outside of Calgary (where I am living right now) after the accident! Way to tell him!

Anyway, safest of travels, I went to Africa a few years back for University and haven't been able to go back since, so I am SO looking forward to seeing your travels :D

Best of luck from one faithful Canadian Fan :D

A female Charley Boorman?

Hi Ewan, I remember reading an article on the delectable Neve McIntosh and in it she was referred to (rightly or wrongly) as the "female Ewan McGregor" - not sure if it referred to the journey to recognition, acting qualities or screen presence (sorry mate but she's got it all over you in the nude scenes). Anyway, it made me wonder who would be the "female Charley Boorman"? Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the interactive extras on this trip - hope it's not detracting from your personal journey.

GS or Griso?

Hi, Y'all
As I am composing this question in my head, I've just been struck by the absurdity of what it is I actually am asking...OK, my question to Ewan was - Guzzi Griso or 1200GS. I believe Ewan owns a Griso and we all know he's riding a GS. My own circumstances allow me to choose between a good secondhand GS or a new Griso and I can't decide. Well, poor old me. This question must seem ludicrous in the context of what you're experiencing in Africa right now...Anyhow, I'm off to re-think my life, as the wise Jedi once advised...

animal dangers...

Hello again and thanks for answering my question about the bikes. Just looked thru all your video logs - looks like the trip of a lifetime, just awesome.
I wanted to ask 2 things... Aren't your wives joining you for part of the trip - will they ride on their own bikes, or pillion - and which part of the trip will this be on?(bet you can't wait!)
And secondly, probably my biggest fear in biking is hitting a wild animal and coming off... is this a worry at all... (especially in Africa!)??
Amazing, inspirational thing you're all doing. Can't wait to see it all on DVD. Thanks guys. Miles.

Best technique for your conditions?

Guys,
What are you finding works best for dealing with the talc like sand? Charley, the Dakar guys make it look so easy just blasting along on the pegs. Is carrying some extra speed better or worse in this situation? Thanks.

See you in RSA

Hi fellows - sounds like brilliant trip. What will you do differently this time? I see you have a big production support team - but will you be able to break loose a bit more than last time? I havent seen Charleys' Paris Dakar race yet. Has Ewan any such experience in the desert? How do the R1200GS Adv. compare with the R1150s? Since you are starting at JO'G you should finish at Cape Agulhas rather than CT - being most southerly point in Africa. Maybe our paths will cross - I am going north from the most southerly tip of South Africa where I live up to Namibia, Angola Botswana, Zambia and then back through Mozambique and Malawi. I will be on a KTM 990 Adv.S - but I will slow down if I see you!! Cheers Rupert Arniston

Design of Your Suits

Hi Ewan and Charley. I have a qestion about the suits you two wear. Are the suits you wear especially designed to keep you cool in the extreme heat? Hope suits was the right word as I don't know much about motorcycles. I am an avid horseback rider. By the way, the picture of the two of you in front of the pyramids would be a great cover photo for your book LWD. Hope you write one!! Own LWR on DVD and love it. Best of luck and be safe!!!!!

How is the emotional side going?

One of the things that drew me into your journey east was the struggle through places like Mongolia and the sense of accomplishment when you completed the road of bones. There were times when you thought you might fail and times where you were on top of the world. Are you finding the emotional side of the trip to be as up and down as before?

Girl's Trip

Hi,
My friends and I are planning a couple of trips and wanted to know what you guys would recommend in regards to anything and everything?! The first trip we'll actually try riding bikes (I have a Yamaha Morphis Scooter w/ a trike kit, because I'm a light weight)What would you recommend for a beginner's trip that would be fun and safe, but have all the ammenities because we're pretty much girlie girls.
Also, in September of 2008 my friend and I are going to Africa-is there any place you absolutely recommend we see or anything we must do?
Thanks for your time and have a very safe trip!!

top tip

to help your back up vehicles from over clogging...and maybe the bikes too,you could use filter pre chargers..its a simple fine almost silk type bag that covers k and n air filters..you drop a few bhp...but it realy stops the filter over clogging..for longevity of engine and filter alike.Any way, good luck guys awww the frea SCOTLAND.

Question

I have watched the Long way round about 20 times and read the book twice. I loved it. I bought my BMW because of you guys. My question is, although You Charlie and You Ewan were the main focus, what about a doing a story about the support team. When the DVD comes out, and it will, what about adding a 2 hour bonus special to the end of the DVD on the support teams story, I think it would complete Charly and Ewan adventure.

Question #2.
What about your next trip and having a contest to see who can ride with you for selected segments?

Thanks all

The Barotse Plain

I don't know what your planned route through Zambia is but here's a top tip for a diversion... take the back route from Lusaka to Vic Falls via Mongu. The road to Mongu is good, the one from Mongu south is a challenge, but OK in the dry season - point is you get to see the Barotse plain - a vast inland flood plain - and on the far side the Liuwa Plain - second only to the Serengeti for Wildebeast herds, and Sioma Falls, the first Zambezi Cataract that no-one has heard of. I've travelled quite a bit of your route - this is just a little diversion - worth it.

Thank you

Hey guys. I just want to say how much you guys have affected my life. last year as soon as I watched LWR my test was booked the next day. within a month my first bike was bought. A TDM 850. I took to it like a duck to water. I have two small trips planned this year. a big one next year. I'm currently on a warship with the navy so your dvd's (Dakar and LWR) have been in-valuable as I miss my bike loads. haha. Ewen I know what you mean about Ted Simon making a big impression. you've done the same. Thank you guys and good luck on the rest of your trip.
all the best. Chris.

personality change

Did you feel that your personality and out look on life changed after the Long Way round? Did your family see a change in your charactersh after you got back? How do you see yourselfs changing after this adventure.
Great to hear your on the road again. BBC Prime are just show The Long way round in South Africa. I love watching it again it reminds me of being back in the UK. I am a UK Diplomat's wife living and working in Pretoria. What a great way to see Africa just makes me want to jump on a bike right now. I was 11yrs when I rode my first bike I would of loved to race motorcross bikes but my Dad said no so had to watch my Brother from the side. Still have the passion for bikes and I now look at roads when we travel in and around South Africa and think great road to ride a bike on. The Drakensbergs if you have time off.

I REALLY enjoyed your book. Fantastic. In 1994 ( after our Independence, when South Africans were free to travel through African) I produced a coffee table book called " Beyond Bagamoyo" It took me 9 months. We ( my all purpose, fix anything,do anything, cook anything, handy man Jiles) travelled 24.000 kilometers. Best regards. Obie Oberholzer.
