I frequently went to Scotland on holiday with my family and have grown to love it, riding a bike through it would be a dream! And thankfully it is more likely to come true than riding around the world! I hope I can get a few direction tips from the LWD DVD!!!

US Route 66

Hi Ewan and Charlie. We loved Long Way Round and Road To Dakar. We were inspired by you to have a go at something like this (but not quite as extreme) ourselves. So in April this year nine of us rode 2400 miles along the remains of Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles and raised £30,000 for Macmillan Cancer support and Promise dreams in doing so. We had nothing like the hardships you guys went through. But surprisingly we did get sub zero temperatures, snow, ice, hailsones, rain and high winds until we left New Mexico (when the weather got warmer). We nevertheless enjoyed the trip immensely)Anyway well done to you both and good luck for the rest of the trip. Cape Town by the way is brilliant.

Fantastic resource ...

Hey all you other 'Long-ers', 'Long-ies', 'LWD-ers, 'LWD-ies ... (hmm, your thoughts on what we should be called as a group of folks following the team's adventures? :-) In any event, for those that may not already know I wanted to share with the community the website www.wikipedia.org as a FANTASTIC resource to use to get more out of the trip. For instance, Ewan mentions the Castle of Mey in one of his most recent video submissions. 'Lo-and-behold ... nice little primer on the old place right there on Wikipedia! Enjoy. Happy trails all. :-) Troy

World's Best Roads?

"Ewan reckons the Scottish roads are the best in the world. Do you agree?" Hmm, the Scot's roads did look pretty impressive from that recent video. However, as seen in LWR, I'll defer to Charley's belly as the true arbiter of "best roads". As such, you'll remember the 'tummy jiggle' scale was best for the USA. ;-) Cheers!

Way to go!

Ewan, Charley and the entire LWD team-

My husband and I discovered Long Way Round in America on Bravo. Or shall I (Amy) say , having Ewan as your favorite actor on your TiVo options did the trick. We immediately fell in love with the show and Adam started looking for a bike immediately.

We wish you the best of luck on Long Way Down and the remainder of your trip. I was excited to find this website to keep up with your journey here in the States.

Sincerely,
Amy & Adam Wirdzek
Nashville, TN

P.S. Ewan, we loved your Nashville t-shirt on your LWR journey. Nice!

Inspiring..........

LWR now LWD, how inspiring you guys are! Well I’ve ridden 14000 (½ day weekends) miles in 2 years. 1 day we rode the south coast, 3 days up north and a few weeks ago 4 days on the isle of wight. Its not quite LWR or LWD but it’s with friends on the open road with some good laughs. Now planning 5 days on the Isle of man, you never know, 7 days in Scotland then……..Europe. Good luck & stay safe, remember rubber down & helmets up!

Could be worst ;-)

Hi Ewan and Charlie. just a comment about "Ewan reckons the Scottish roads are the best in the world. Do you agree?"
As i travelled with my father in Scotland in 2003 with two "old " R1100R and a cannot say that the road are bad..personnaly i really like this kind of road, it simply looks like the swiss montain road without the see ;-))))). Try it, you will be surpise too and the landscap are sometime also very similare (as my Scotisch father in law told me several time). Let us dream and have fun
Take care

Freedom again

Firstly I was excited for you both to be on another adventure, now after spending the weekend doing house work and looking after my three kids and husband, I am so envious of you. I have been checking the web site daily to check out what you two are up to. I would love to be out on the road to freedom. Think of this Aussie working mother of 3 when you have a cuppa.

After watching LWR, you felt like family, I'm an ex despatch rider and understand how you can enjoy even the tough times. You showed that people all around the planet are warm and welcoming (and it's only the politicians who mess with the place). Good luck with the latest adventure - can't wait to get to know the people you meet on the way.

What a journey!!

Hi Ewan and Charlie

Having fallen in love with you both and everything that you experienced and achieved in 'Long way Around' I am loving the fact now that you have the drive and ambition to do it all again - and that I will be able to experience it all again too! For different reasons it would be impossible for an awful lot of us to experience the adventure that you are having but it is possible by supporting you both and watching the journey as is happens.

I wish all the team all the very best and look forward to being able to watch while you are on the 'Long Way Down'. Both of you take care and enjoy.

Family

It's really nice that some of your family members got to be invovled on at least some parts of this trip. That's a really nice thing to be able to do. As for is Scotland has the best roads, I wouldn't know because I've never been, but as long as they're smoother than some the horribly pot-filled ones here in Toronto, they're probably fantastic. :)

All the best from the Scottish Enduro Lads

Ewan/ Charlie

All the best on te trip (So jellous). Loved Longway Round and can't wait to see the banter from Longway Down.

Favorite bit was the riding and remoteness of Mongolia (Hmmmm!! Nice Pants Charlie). It really is just like Scotland. And the bogs.... Enduro tastic.

Maybe you will come and taste the scottish Enduro hospitality one day.

All the best.

Wish I Was With You

After years of Jap bikes, LWR convinced me to buy a GS. It's been around Europe and convinced my wife, after 35 years on the pillion, to get a licence. Now she has a Beamer too - at 58 the oldest person taught by BMW Rider Training!!

All from watching Long Way Round.

I've read LWR and Race to Dakar (signed by Simon Pavey when I met him in Wales) twice. Now need a new book so go for it.

Scottish Roads..

I went touring around Scotland on the back of a bike a couple of years ago, my bum was numb for the duration and it was freezing cold wet & snowed in the middle of august...But it was the BEST holiday I have EVER been on, gorgeous scenery, windy roads - heaven! The A68 is pretty darn fun too!! I have to agree on this one....Awesome roads! Have a safe trip guys :-)

Hello

Hi guys!

I'm from Scotland but I've been living in Italy for the last 22 years give or take.

I really enjoyed "The Long Way Round", truly a breath of fresh air in this world of crass syndicated sitcoms.

ANYWAY, just to say, that I have fond memories of visiting Scotland as a child with my parents and remembering the times we visited my grandparents in Killin and visited Crieff where my Dad was born.Spectacular roads and I couldn't agree more with Ewan.

I can't wait to see the full series!

Aurra Best

Safe journey lads and aurra best frae the bridie toon of Forfar, looking forwards to seeing the completed DVD. When I was backpacking through South America not long after Falklands war I met two Argentinians in the Hotel Europe in Peru and we had a hilarious battle in the communal shower room throwing bars o soap at each other, that was when they told me they were touring S.A. on bikes and heading now for Argentina and invited me to join them - i didnt as my journey was going elsewhere but isnt it coold how so many such things and oppertuities can open up and what adventures and memories and friendships can be formed - thats living and im sure thats how you feel too - i get the feeling your also a great ambassador for Scotland so long may you be that and keep up the good work. Toodaloo the noo!!

Top riding - Scotland

I haven't ridden as widely as Ewan but I agree that some of Scotlands roads are just fantastic for a bike; when you can see and it isn't howling a gale and raining.
Even in those conditions I'm still on the bike every day (Triumph Tiger). Living in central Scotland it just makes the congestion so much easier to deal with and whenever the chance arises to use Scotlands A and B roads they never fail to delight and enthuse. There are also hundreds of miles of firetrails to explore and get right amongst it, if your bike can handle it.
