Humble
Boy (Gielgud)
Now entirely re-cast, Charlotte Jones's subtle and insinuating
comedy about a dominating mother and the adult son who returns home
for his father's funeral remains a play of rare wit and intelligence.
Maria Aitken gloriously restores some of the brittleness
and haughty but faded glamour that Diana Rigg originally
brought to the role of the mother at the National before Felicity
Kendal took over in the West End, while Adrian Scarborough
replaces Simon Russell Beale as the son tiptoeing gingerly
through his emotional life.
