This
all-American Broadway treatment of the all-British comedy hit may
have cheek (not to mention the bare rear cheeks of its steelworkers-turned-strippers)
to relocate the action from Sheffield to Buffalo, NY, but it works!
The
production, featuring music and lyrics by David Yazbeck and
a script by American playwright Terence McNally, is staged
and designed by the original Broadway creative team, headed by director
Jack O'Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell.
At
the Academy Awards in March 1998, host Billy Crystal parodied
the year's top five Best Film nominees, choosing 'Hello Dolly'
for his send-up of 'The Full Monty'. It confirmed what scores
of producers around the world had begun to realise, that the film
would make a great musical.
Warm-hearted
