21 year-old north London rap prodigy Ms Dynamite has added to her already-impressive list of accolades with six nominations in this year's Music of Black Origin (Mobo) Awards.

The nominations come after a year in which she has burst onto the scene with two top 10 singles and a Mercury-nominated debut album.

Ms Dynamite, or Naomi McLean-Daley, has been named on the Mobo shortlists for categories including best album, UK act of the year, best single and best R&B act.

US singer-songwriter sensation Alicia Keys and hip-hop star Ja Rule follow her with four nominations each.

Prominence

Daley shot to prominence after appearing on a track with the pioneering garage group So Solid Crew.

On her debut album, A Little Deeper, she hits out at "gangsta culture" and criticises drug dealers and black-on-black violence.

The Mobos, now in their seventh year, honour "all types of music from urban culture" - a manifesto that seeks to reward music that is black in spirit rather than skin colour.

As if to prove the point So Solid Crew are shortlisted for act of the year while Birmingham's The Streets - aka 22 year-old Mike Skinner - is hotly tipped for best album.

More nominees

The other artists vying to be named UK act of the year are chart-toppers Sugababes, soul singer Beverley Knight, dance maestro Daniel Bedingfield and female garage trio Mis-Teeq.

The awards will be presented at the London Arena on 1 October.

Talent support

Founder and organiser Kanya King said the Mobos were supporting UK talent - but there was also a strong line-up of US acts.

"We're back waving the union flag but, as always, with an ear Stateside," she said.

"This year's line-up reflects the emergence of strong domestic talents."
