He's an artist who first started making music back in the halcyon days of the mid-70s. And out of the Class Of '76 he's the only one - apart from a slight dip in the late 80s - who's enjoyed continuous commercial success.

He's Paul Weller and his 10th solo album Studio 150 has just entered the charts at Number 2, pipped to the top spot by a handful of more copies sold by Embrace and their new album Out Of Nothing.

I had the pleasure of seeing Weller twice in concert last week.

"Both his shows last week radiated energy and excitement. No wonder he's still Britain's favourite post-punk artist..."

First at a special rooftop appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Tottenham Court Road in front of a packed audience, and then the following night at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith for a concert which was filmed for cinema, DVD and television release.

On both occasions I was mightily impressed with his seemingly undaunted love of music, which continues to shine through after all this time.

a few surprises

Both performances were with his usual band of merry men backing him (bar guitarist Steve Craddock who was on duty elsewhere, but whose shoes were filled by mean young guitar player Ken Perperfus).

Paul WellerAnd both shows saw him radiating energy and excitement, performing his new album of cover versions with a few surprises thrown in from his extensive back catalogue.

No wonder he's still Britain's favourite post-punk singer/songwriter - bar none.

If you were unable to catch him last week, you can see him at the Hammersmith Apollo on November the 20th and 21st.

On his current form I'd suggest you get your tickets sorted sharpish...
