Not another column about The Beatles? It's true - and Lord Crowley of Pop is unabashed...

Regular readers to this column will probably be aware of my undying affection for all things Beatles.

In fact, I can honestly say if it wasn't for them and the impact they had on me at the age of 13, I probably wouldn't be doing what I am today.

And so, it was with great anticipation that I went to see Paul McCartney in concert at the NIA in Birmingham, just ahead of those Earls Court shows in London. And it was no disappointment.

"If music be the food of love, Paul McCartney is quite simply a master chef..."

I must have resembled a village idiot because I sat through the two and a half hour extravaganza with an inane grin from ear to ear. Loving the band, the music, the patter and everything about it.

Taking in songs from his stints with the Beatles, Wings and his solo work, stand out moments are hard to pinpoint because it was all SO good.

explosive

But at a push, I'd have to say my enjoyment factor went into overdrive on songs like 'Everynight', 'Here There And Everywhere', 'Back In The USSR' and the quite literally explosive 'Live And Live Die'.

Also moving was his ode to John Lennon, 'Here Today', his version of George Harrison's classic 'Something' and his tribute to Linda, 'My Love'.

Paul McCartney
It's good to have you back Paulie!

Never afraid to ham it up, Paul recounted stories of his past as well as some very funny anecdotes about massages on tour, trying to be all French and sophisticated as a young teenager - and playing a ukelele round at George's after dinner!

absolute ball

The band (Rusty, Abe, Wix and Brian) are as tight as a camel's proverbial in a sand storm. Capable of following their leader up the Amazon at the drop of a hat I'll bet.

If music be the food of love, Paul McCartney is quite simply a master chef, and if you went to Earls Court you probably had an absolute ball.

The title of his current 'live' CD is, of course, 'Back In The World'. It's good to have you back Paulie!
