Like
all the best bands before and since, the Stone Roses looked and
sounded like no one else...

Their
fusion of rock and dance influences set them apart from the pack
towards the end of 80s, while their eponymously-titled debut album
perfectly captured the zeitgeist.
| "Squire's
new album finds him in fine fettle and confident mood, with
his voice sounding better than before..." |
Boasting
many moods and many great songs, it still sounds as fresh and exciting
as the day it was released.
I
could kick myself, though, because I never got to see the band onstage
for some reason.
influential
Which
is why I was looking forward to interviewing for the first time
former Roses guitar hero John Squire - primarily to talk about his
new album Marshall's House (released 9 February), but also
to look back on his time in that influential, magical band.
His
new album, incidentally, finds him in fine fettle and confident
mood, with his voice - perhaps still an acquired taste for some
- sounding better in my opinion than before.

The
former Roses guitar hero is also an accomplished painter
|
The
songs, too, have all been inspired in some way by the paintings
of American Realist Edward Hopper (remember Squire is an accomplished
painter with an exhibition of his artwork coming up at the ICA in
the middle of February).
Marshall's
House has more of a band feel than its predecessor, Time
Changes Everything, and is all the better for it.
revealing
Still
a relative novice to doing interviews - unbelievably! - he seemed
to relax after a while and it was a revealing interview which I
think he enjoyed.
Going back to the Roses, early this summer sees the DVD release
of The Complete Stone Roses, a comprehensive account of their
story, featuring videos, rarely-seen TV clips and other rare footage.
Fingers
crossed it'll be a timely reminder of a very special band who truly
left their mark on the pop landscape...
