So, after mucho anticipation, the world platform for the Beautiful Game - the World Cup - is finally here and up and playing. 'Hurrah', say I on behalf of couch potatoes the world over!

I guess one must be a realist though when weighing up England's chances of lifting the golden trophy, but we can all dream and live in hope can't we?

What's the titile of that great old Audience song (Sophie Ellis-Bextor's first band)? 'A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed!' Yeah right! And being an England fan, I know it's something we've had to get used to over the years, but as a wise man once said 'you never know'.

All this football mania kinda got me thinking about past and present England World Cup songs. Now there's a brief chat if ever there was one...

Can we kick off (tee hee) with the present official Ant and Dec effort? Actually, I'd rather not as well....

Pants and The Pets
In fact, this World Cup seems to have seen a smattering of songs released like never before. And most alas (bar the England Boys footied-up version of The Jam's 'Going Underground' which I'm rather, predictably, partial to) are absolutely PANTS.

Gary Crowley - picking The Pet Shop Boys for a top footie anthem

You know what would have made a GREAT England World Cup song (with a bit of re-jigging in the lyric department)? The Pet Shop Boys forthcoming single 'I Get Along' (Parlophone) from their current 'Release' album.

One memorable singalong from beginning to end, it's tailor made for the terraces with tinges of The Fabs and Mott the Hoople thrown in for good measure. I can hear it now...

Remember these?
Oh well. Maybe we're due a GREAT footie anthem next time round. Still, we've always got two TOP hole efforts from the 1970 and 1990 England squads ('Back Home' and 'World In Motion' respectively) to play repeatedly and get all misty-eyed over.

They certainly bring a tear to these beady old eyes. Still, here's keeping everything crossed for what happens on the pitch...altogether now 'Go England...'
