We
asked for your assistance in putting names to faces from Tex's photographs
- and many of you have come forward to meet us at the Gallery and
help unravel the mystery....
Michael
Feinberg emailed us to identify Maurice Woolf and his girlfriend
of the time, Alison, in this photograph by Tex. Maurice used to
have a fruit stall in Spitalfields and is now a picture framer,
still working in the area.
He's
passionate about the area and, when we met him, he described what
a mixed community it used to be. "We only realised what a
special area it was when we left it and went to other parts of
London." Maurice's father also has a large collection of
photographs of the area and he was thrilled to see Tex's images,
recognising quite a few of the faces.
Cathy
Peters (wearing the pink headscarf) was recognised in the photograph
on the right. We eventually made contact with her and she came to
the Gallery to be interviewed.
Tex's
picture was taken at an 'alternative arts' fair in Tower Hamlets
(on the grounds of what is now Tower Hamlets school). Cathy's pictured
with her niece Tracey, her friend Maureen Azzopardi (in the black
V neck)and her sister Charlotte with their children, nephews and
nieces.
Mohammed
Shan Miah's daughter saw this photo of her father (far left, main
photo) in one of the local east London papers.
Tex's portrait is a group shot of Mohammed's friends outside the
Naz cinema in Brick Lane in 1973 or 1974. Many of them worked in
the textile industry in the area and Mohammed has very fond memories
of that time.
BBC
