Art director Peter Saville's work will always be synonymous with the bands Joy Division and New Order.

And his landmark album covers and artwork for Manchester's Factory Records have influenced UK design right across the board - from sleeve art to corporate identity.

Now for the first time, the Design Museum has amassed an amazing body of his work, including the earliest creations for Factory and for Roxy Music, right up to his consultancy work for Givenchy and his own "recycled" abstract art.

The Peter Saville Show doesn't just dwell on the finished product - it also gives an insight into the
creative process surrounding his distinctive brand of graphic design.

gems

Saville is fastidious about archiving and not just his work in progress but source material too, and the Design Museum has been given access to some hidden gems.

Music fans will recognise the whisky advert that inspired Electronic's Getting Away With It sleeve, the science manual that give Joy Division's Unknown Pleasure LP its motif - and the book that give him the idea for the Factory poster.

In addition his controversial fashion campaigns for Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and his work with other musicians such as OMD, Pulp, Suede and Wham are all well covered.

loyal clients

The retrospective also features new music from his most loyal clients, New Order, which will be released in the coming weeks.

Trivia fans will also note the TV footage of Peter Saville's old Factory partner Tony Wilson interviewing Iggy Pop and other punk and new wave artists.

Music or design fan or neither, this exhibition is an excellent introduction to graphic design and how it has evolved over the past 25 years.

And if you are a music fan, it will serve only to endear you more to one of the industry's most influential figures.

The Peter Saville Show is at the Design Museum, Shad Thames, SE1 until 14 September . Open daily from 10.00 - 17.45, admission £6, £4 cons. Nearest tube: Tower Hill, London Bridge
