The Big Picture: Millions

A subversive fable from one of the UK's most engaging filmmakers, Millions sees director Danny Boyle transform a kiddie movie into a painfully accurate portrait of British consumerism (writes Jamie Russell).

Sweet but never sickly, it's the story of Damian (Alex Etel), a seven-year-old schoolboy who finds a sack of stolen sterling.

Prone to hilarious visions of saints, he's convinced it's a gift from God, but with Britain about to switch to the Euro his worldly-wise nine-year-old brother Anthony (Lewis McGibbon) knows they'll have to use it or lose it.

But while the pair start flashing cash around town, the gang who stole the wonga come looking for the loot...

As far from the zombie apocalypse of 28 Days Later as is imaginable, this fanciful comedy has all the fantastical brilliance of A Life Less Ordinary without any of the disappointing downside.

Building into a clever morality tale about Britain's economic growth and our duty to others, it's Shallow Grave retold as a fairy tale for big kids everywhere. Gordon Brown will adore it.

Also out: Paul Kaye stars in the entertaining mockumentary It's All Gone Pete Tong, about the rise and fall of a legendary DJ (review here), while House Of Wax has Eliza Cuthbert and Paris Hilton in a creepy wax museum. And we don't mean Madame Tussauds.

Elsewhere: Vin Diesel babysits dysfunctional kids in the irredeemably awful family comedy The Pacifier, while Stander is an exciting, true-life crime drama from Forces Of Nature director Bronwen Hughes.

Finally: Bill and Ben meets Shakespeare in the epic puppet fantasy Strings; a girl is transformed into a cat in The Cat Returns (Neko No Ongaeshi), another magical fantasy from the creators of Spirited Away; and The Consequences Of Love (Le Conseguenze Dell'Amore) is a must-see Italian gem about a mysterious hotel resident with business of his own.
