The
Last Detail (1973)
This was a personal project put together by Jack Nicholson
before he was catapulted into the Hollywood stratosphere.
Here he plays a
sailor escorting a young Randy Quaid to naval prison, where the
rookie faces an eight-year stretch for stealing $40.
In a dry run for
his Oscar-winning portrayal of Randal McMurphy in "One
Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", Nicholson's 'Bad-ass'
Buddowski is determined to buck the system, and show his naive young
charge a good time before he's locked away.
Robert "Chinatown"
Towne's script is suitably salty, and the foul mouthed tirades against
authority caused many to identify the shadow of Vietnam in this
hilarious yet bilious account of being trapped inside the system.
An underrated gem
in the current Nicholson retrospective at the NFT.
