As part of local democracy week teenagers in Tower Hamlets have got the chance to take part in a series of events to help them understand how their council works. One of the more unusual events will be a ‘speed-cotchin’ session. It follows the format of speed-dating, where the students can come face-to-face with councillors and have quick discussions with them on a variety of topics. Young people will also be invited into the heart of the local authority - the council chamber- where a Question Time-style event will be held. Make a differenceNominations can also be made during the week for the next Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets. ![]() Minnie Lansbury's clock on the Bow Road The current young mayor, Akram Hussain, will attend the full council meeting on Wednesday night to see how councillors make decisions that affect the whole borough. Cllr Clair Hawkins, Lead Member for Children’s Services at Tower Hamlets Council said she hoped the week of events will give the borough’s youngsters the chance to find out more about local government. She said: “We want our young people to know that they can make a difference, and to feel they can speak to directly to the council about the issues that affect them. “This week is all about highlighting ways they can do those things, and we’re really looking forward to seeing young people across the borough getting involved.” East End suffragette Minnie Lansbury will also be honoured during the week with the unveiling of the restored Minnie Lansbury clock on Bow Road on Thursday. last updated: 10/10/2008 at 14:43 You are in: London > London Local > Tower Hamlets > Community Life > Future voters get taste of democracy |
