Fan of the weekYou are in: London > Radio > The Non League Football Show > Fan of the week > Fan of the Week: Reg Drew ![]() Reg Drew Fan of the Week: Reg DrewReg Drew must surely be one of Burton Albion's top fligght fans - but why is he risking missing out on his team's promotion push? For a fan that doesn't miss a Burton Albion game home or away there has to be a very good reason for him to risk seeing his team's promotion push. But for Reg Drew and four fellow fanatical Brewers supporters they are going to risk missing Albion's home tie with Altrincham on Tuesday the 8th of April. It is all in the name of charity One Goal. One Goal is the idea of Reg and four other Burton Albion fans who have to come to together to raise money for the Nightingale Macmillan Unit in Derby.
Reg, and his son Mark and fellow Burton fans Lee Whyman, Shane Roberts and Darren Haywood, will be doing this by visiting all 24 Blue Square Premier grounds in two days. The five fans' car journey will begin at 5am on Monday 7th of April from York City's Kit Kat Crescent taking in 10 other grounds before arriving at Torquay United's Plainmoor Stadium by nightfall. The second day will involve another early start where they will visit the other 11 stadiums before hopefully arriving at the Pirelli Stadium before the match starts. The team is obtaining sponsorship via donations from the clubs to be visited (all items to be auctioned online), sponsorship from major companies, individual sponsorship and online donations through their website: http://onegoal.bravehost.com. "It's going to be a big ask," said Reg but he believes all five are really looking forward to it. The bin lorry driver said the trip was originally the brainchild of Lee Whyman, a fleet manager, but that he had personal reasons for lending his support. Mr Drew said two relatives, both now deceased, had received excellent care from the charity, which was 'second to none' and helped people suffering from a condition which affected many. Arriving at the Pirelli Stadium on time for the Burton Albion home game is a great incentive for the team although Reg has one concern. He said: "Even if we do make it in time for the Altrincham game we may end up sleeping throughout the ninety minutes." That would say something for Reg who is such a fan he has rarely missed a game home or away for more than ten years. The 46-year-old co-runs the unofficial away supporters coach and is in his two minds about Burton's promotion push into the Football League. He said: "As much as I want to see Burton progressing I would really miss NonLeague football and I know many Burton fans who feel the same way." last updated: 31/03/2008 at 10:14 You are in: London > Radio > The Non League Football Show > Fan of the week > Fan of the Week: Reg Drew PodcastDownload or subscribe to this programme's podcast |
