Londoners describe earthquake

BBC London's Jumoke Fashola took calls from Londoners shortly after the earthquake early on Wednesday morning.

The biggest earthquake in the UK for nearly 25 years has shaken homes across large parts of England.

People in Newcastle, Yorkshire, London, Manchester, the Midlands and Norfolk and also parts of Wales, felt the tremor just before 0100 GMT.

Londoners phoned into Jumoke Fashola's Late Show on BBC London 94.9 shortly after 1am to describe their experiences.

Listen to some of the calls below;

You can also listen the whole Late Show;

Emails also came flooding in to BBC London from people across the capital describing tremors and buildings shaking.

01:27am I was lying in bed just before 01.00 on Wednesday 27th Feb and felt a clear earth tremor which woke me up. 01:32am I live nine floors up in a tower block in Hoddesdon. At about one this morning I felt a strange sensation in the small of my back and realised I could feel the wall shaking through the sofa... I looked around and my plants were swaying. One fell over, and my work lamp swayed and fell back against the wall. I could feel the floor moving under my feet. This all lasted a few seconds and when it eased off I got up and looked out of the window. I saw the security guard downstairs come out of his office; he looked puzzled so I rang him. He said that his CCTV had been shaking and he was scared and wasn't sure who to call. I called the police to see if they had received any reports of explosions or other odd events and they said they had felt it too in Welwyn. It was very disorientating and quite strong! Most unexpected of Hertfordshire. Julie Stringer

02:04am Here in London (Clapham, SW4), I was catching up on some late night work at my desk early this morning (1am) when I noticed the desk trembling. Looking up towards the window, a lantern on a shelf was shaking and I wondered for the first time if a tube line ran underneath the flat. For a moment, I considered that there might be a minor tremor but dismissed that as ridiculous. Oli

07:40am We felt the earthquake in Brimsdown, Enfield - Oshun

I went to bed just before 1am after doing some reading. I got into bed & about five minutes later I turned over onto my left side & thought I had imagined the bed had moved. I thought it might have been my cats jumping on the bed but neither were there & they're not that strong to move the bed. I thought nothing of it until i was on the train this morning & overheard two ladies talking about an earthquake. When i got back home i put on the television & watched the news which confirmed there had been an earthquake at 1am & it then made sense. I  wasn't imagining the bed moving.

I was up at that time lastnight and felt nothing but with the epicenter not even close to me it's not suprising.  The clips show houses up north are very badly built if most of the affected homes had the chimney stack fall in.

Personally if it wasnt for the clips and damage like so many others it could be passed as a joke "UK hit by earthquake" what next as we have already had a hurricane of 87, tornadoes and flooding all I think left is wild fire that takes days to put out.  Not that I want to put a jinks on it.

Peter Tugwell

I live and watch the BBC in the South of France. As it happened I went to bed just before 2am local time (1am UK time). It is normally very quiet here and I did not notice any effects as I checked and locked my outbuildings. However... I particularly noticed the large number of DOGS BARKING!!! Not just the odd one or two but dozens all over my valley!! It was so unusual that I stood outside and could not account for it..... until now!
