Sian Berry was born in Cheltenham in 1974 and studied Metallurgy and the Science of Materials at Trinity College, Oxford. After graduating she embarked upon a career in medical communications, where she worked as a copywriter. As well as combining her duties for the Green Party, she currently works as a website manager for Imperial College. She lives in Kentish Town, North London.

Before joining the Green Party, she was one of the founders in 2003 of the Camden-based campaign group, Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, which gained some notoriety for slapping fake parking tickets on four wheel drive vehicles in London.

It was the fuel protests in September 2000 that really sparked Ms. Berry's political career. She was angry because, in her opinion, the government caved in far too easily, and decided that it was time get involved in the political process herself. She had been a Labour voter in 1997 and said she "felt really let down and I want to do something about it."

After joining the Green Party, she rose through the ranks to become their Principal Speaker and National Campaigns Co-ordinator. She won 45% of the London Green Party's vote to win the Mayoral nomination against five other candidates.

"I spent years trying to get elected for the Green Party in various ways, so this is another part of that," Siān Berry said to BBC London in November 2007. "We need someone who has good ideas, who will represent the party in London, work hard during the campaign and inspire people to vote for them. I thought I would go for it."
