One student filmmaker has also been documenting the changes to the area and exploring for himself some of the struggles of its young residents. Oti Ikomi grew up in Deptford and is currently studying at Greenwich Community College. He and some of his fellow students went out filming in SE8 and produced a 15 minute documentary film. Aragon Tower in Deptford on the edge of the Pepys Estate is one of the area's more controversial developments. The one time council owned high rise block was sold off by Lewisham Council to developers and converted into luxury apartments and penthouses. Berkeley Homes say it's now the Capital's tallest residential tower and according to their website, "some of the most desirable apartments in London". New social housing has also been built nearby. While on location with Oti, one of the new residents told us: "Ours have only been up two and a half years and they are filthy, " she exclaimed. "Once the buildings are put up they don't seem to care." ![]() Deptford film maker Oti Ikomi Some of the area's younger residents were also asked what they would like to see change as Deptford develops. Farming, fishing and football tournaments were a few of their suggestions. The documentary looks at The Lord Clyde pub which is home to a community boxing club and the Albany arts centre. Deptford Adventure playground scheme is also featured. Playground worker Aaron tells the film: "If you've got something to do your mind will be off crime." The film is dedicated to the teenage victims of knife and gun crime. Oti believes if local people are asked what how they feel about regeneration it will in the long run benefit us all. He also believes documenting the feelings towards such changes can play a vital role. "Documentaries are not just for the rich," he told BBC London. "It's for the local community so they feel a sense of belonging in a world that's moving rapidly with technology". Oti has also worked with a Deptford production company on a film about knife crime called 'Knife Lewisham'. Click here to see it online.
