FeaturesYou are in: London > Radio > The Non League Football Show > Features > A prior engagement with the championship ![]() Two hearts one club A prior engagement with the championshipShould we or shouldn't we talk up our chances? Caroline Barker on always being the bridesmaid and never being the bride. My friend got engaged this week. I sent her the obligatory text message and waited for her to call so I could congratulate her heartily. She called, excited obviously, but also a little bit deflated. You see, we’ve been talking about her getting engaged since we were in short skirts and knee high socks (last week) and now we’ve finally got here and, although she’s absolutely over the moon (I am too, truly, although it should have happened to me first) the fact is she’s also a little “over it”. Although it’s a great thing getting engaged, one minute it’s here, the next it’s gone, we can’t have those long conversations about him taking out an announcement in the paper, flying overhead with one of those long message things attached to a plane, or surprising her at work with a full blown Philharmonic orchestra. It’s done. Gone. Vamoos. I know how he proposed to her, (and yes it was down on one knee and rather romantic) but now it’s a rock on her finger waiting to be replaced. A month in and no weddingWe’re a month into the football season and I, too, feel like I’ve lost MY engagement party. Six games and four weeks ago we were going to walk this league, down the aisle with it in fact. I was that confident I’d even started talking about the heady heights of the Conference south.
And now? Well a cursory glance at the table and there’s a thousand and one stats about our current league position, rating from dire to over-optimistic. We’ve played four of the top 10 sides, taken 11 points from a possible 18, we’ve conceded four they’ve conceded three and possibly the most depressing; if Dan drinks three cups of tea and Mark eats ten burgers how long will it take Bob to hand out the half time sweets?! So what do you do?So here’s what I’m suggesting. Either A) I take an amnesty over the close season in future; put away silly ideas of promotion or relegation, refuse to talk up the latest big signing B) suggest to the FA we play continuously throughout the year, a game a week, no end to the season, no relegation, no promotion, just one long football year… or C) I, and the 1,000 others who love to digest the stuff with me, realise we’re only six games into the season, one month down – the best part of highs, lows and average games to go, this is when we should be looking forward (with the proviso come January we can complain as much as we like). So I’m getting a grip. We’ve not had the wedding yet, and I’m not entirely sure we should chuck the bouquet (aka the title) at our lust driven rivals. The future’s still bright and with a little luck it could still be claret and white. Now, a win this weekend and that’s five of the top ten sides…da dum di dum, da dum di dum… last updated: 13/02/2008 at 14:35 Have Your SayYou are in: London > Radio > The Non League Football Show > Features > A prior engagement with the championship PodcastDownload or subscribe to this programme's podcast |
