In Hodgkin's lymphoma some of the cells in this system called lymphocytes become abnormal. They don’t work properly at fighting infection and they keep growing and making new cells even though the body doesn’t need them. Often the cells grow in a part of the lymphatic system called the lymph nodes. There are lymph nodes all through our body. They are usually about the size of a bean. But if lymphoma is growing in them they get bigger. Some lymph nodes are deep inside our bodies but if someone’s lymph nodes in the neck or groin are affected they might feel a lump there. When Hodgkin's lymphoma starts it usually affects lymph nodes in one area. But, the lymphoma cells can sometimes spread through the lymphatic system to lymph nodes in other parts of the body. Lymphoma cells can also travel in the blood to parts of the body outside the lymph nodes. The most common first sign of Hodgkin lymphoma is finding a lump somewhere like the neck or armpit. But, there may be other symptoms. Some of these affect the whole body, like feeling tired and drained, losing weight, or having fevers and heavy sweats at night. Other symptoms depend on where the lymphoma is in the body. So, if there was lymphoma in the chest this might make someone feel short of breath at times. The main treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma is chemotherapy. This kills the lymphoma cells when they are dividing to make new cells. Although this can be a tough treatment to cope with, it is usually very successful, and most people are cured.
